Torsion Key Removal

I've seen some guys here say that a ball joint tool works as well (or better) than a Torsion Bar Unloadig tool for replacing torsion keys - is this correct?

Also, are these tools used only to install new reindexing "levelling keys", or are they required when removing/replacing stock keys as well?

They're needed for stock keys as well.

 

I used a balljoint tool because that's what i had. If you're installing re-indexed keys (which preload the hell out of the tbars) then get the tbar tool. It has a bump on the top that secures it to the crossmember. The balljoint tool was a bit "iffy" when installing reindexed keys... it trys to start sliding.

 

For stock keys, the balljoint press works fine because they really don't preload the bars much.

Thanks for the quick reply. At this point I am looking to remove the bars to replace the cross-member bushings (to get rid of an annoying "clunk" in the front suspension). I'm reinstalling the stock keys.

 

I suspect I may be looking an a lift of some kind in the future, but for now stock will do.

Yeah, if you're just reinstalling the stock keys, spend the money on the balljoint tool since you can also use it to replace balljoints.
