Preferred Ps Fluid Flavor?

Getting ready to swap out my PS fluid via turkey baster method. What are everyone's preferred choice of fluid? OEM or aftermarket?

I have AMSOIL Synthetic PS fluid in both my 2010 GMC Sierra and my 2009 CTS4 AWD Performance. I use a bigger suction pump then a turkey baster. I also measured what I removed so I knew exactly how much I removed and I would not overfill.

All I have ever used, and all we use in the shop at work is ATF, no problems so far.

Interesting. You would think it would be less expensive for GM to just go with ATF instead of PSF if it is the same, but obviously it isn't. Glad you are able to run ATF with no issues.

Where I work, we put ATF in every power steering system from highway trucks down to cars. Even in the brand new trucks. The way it was explained to me, was that they are both a hydraulic system. And on almost every medium duty truck i've worked on calls for ATF in the power steering system. IMO, power steering fluid is just more expencive alternitive.

Well if you are just servicing your company vehicles that's up to you but if you are doing that to customer cars then you are betraying the trust the customer puts in your service.

Only if you charge for PS fluid and put ATF in instead. I have used it for 20 years now....no problems thus far....in about 6 different cars of my own and many more for friends....but they were beaters or older cars. And, when put in those old ford PS systems it actually makes them quieter, you know the ones back in the 90's that sounded like a sickly supercharger.

But you guys are right....they are two totally different fluids.

But do what you want really.

The one issue I can see is warranty issues if you have PS problems and they find ATF in the PS system. For those that are still in their warranty period.

Most def.

Apparently AFT expands when heated too, and can cause more pressure in the lines...or so I have read....but I mean you would need to be driving sideways through the switchbacks to make your power steering heat up that much. In an old system though, there are more detergents in ATF, and can actually make your PS work better. Clears out all the years of gunk from the spool valves etc, as most people just add fluid when needed and never change the PS fluid.
