Your Mission: Mole Eradication

Okay, I hate moles!!  Does anyone have a "sure-fire" way of killing/driving off these lil basstuds??

My conservation dept website said to "capture and release" :jester:   Yea right, if I ever captured one, it would be slow torture and ugly death (for the mole, that is).

Does anyone use pesticides?  Like diazanon to get rid of the grubs or (so I've read) do these just make the moles dig more tunnels to find the fewer grubs?  I have a pond with fish in the yard, so I would like to stay away from pesticides if possible.  Or do you like traps?  If so, what type is the best??

I am the only person in my neighborhood without a large (barking) outside dog, so I think all the moles come into my yard to get away from the dogs.  Do dogs dig for these lil terrorists or are the moles just scared of the dogs barking and whatnot?

Whaddya think?  Any input / suggestion / recipe (mole chili?) would be appreciated.

hardware stores sell mole traps

We use one that goes into the ground and when the mole trips it two sharp objects get poked into him (death instantly)

You have to then dig him up is the only bad part

This is the only thing that has worked for us  :jester:

Well, my cat does a good job of killing both moles and voles (Voles are like Cousins to Moles, it's all one big ground digging mafia that needsto be stopped! :jester: ), I can offer her services for $10 per hour plus Travel Time. :seeya:

Over the past 12 years we've owned her, she has brought back many trophies of the wildlife kind.

Cat vs. Copperhead Snakes: Cat: 3 Snakes: 0

Cat Vs. Black Snakes- Cat: 12 (does it count if she gets the same one over and over again?) Black Snakes: 0

Cat vs. Bunny Rabbits (Sorry Paco)- Cat: 3  Rabbits: 0

Cat vs. Moles- Cat: 100+ Moles: 0

So, lets see here, Ryans solution is painful and cheap (I presume) and little upkeep (compared to cats/dogs).  The only reservation I have about traps is my two lil ones playing in the yard.  I have a 2yr old and a 3.5yr old and, go figure, they are very curious about things!  As long as they can't trip the trap and be hurt , I will prolly try this spike-trap thing.

I did not know cats went after moles, though, that could be an option.  Is there special, Quantico-type, training grounds for mole killin cats?? :jester:

I did have a beagle for a year or so and that bugger dug up everything BUT the moles!!  I am shying away from the dog solution at least for now.

Nice pooch, TXDOC.

Thanks for the replies, guys!! :thumb:

you can trip the trap.  It is above the ground however it wont hurt you.  The spikes are already in the ground they just go deeper when triggered.

I have set off ours (by my hand foot truck, dont ask hehe)

I havent been hurt yet

Ahhhh, man. I wish I had so many targets.

I've chased and shot  (Tony Sorpano Style) at a procupine across the deck once, hitting him 5 times with my compressed air pellet gun.

I'd sit back with a case of beer and take aim.

but thats how we get rid of rodents here in Canada, not sure what your gun laws are like down there.

I use the spike trap too, but mine has 6 spikes.  My soil is a little soft, so I have to prop a cinder block against the top of the trap so it doesn't pop up when tripped.

Stomp down all the tunnels, so you can find which ones are active.

I would say that it definately can hurt a curious kid, there's a lot of spring action in that trap.  If it's a problem, just trip it in the morning with your foot and reset it at night.

Also, if you get rid of the grubs, the moles will go away.

Strange you should mention this method as this is (basically) what my Dad does.  'Cept he uses the .22 rifle with the scope and more like a six-pack of buds.  Just sits back on the porch and watches the run (that he smashed down earlier) for movement.  Than *bam* out go the lights.  Unfortunately i haven't the time or aim for this method.  But it sure as #### sounds like fun :(

When it all boils down to it, you might as well sit out with the old .22, & wait for the lil MF's to peak there heads out... Simple, cheap, and effective... Not to mention Kinda entertaining...  :jester:

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
