Rough Idle/engine Knock/service Engine Soon Light Came On

I have a 2001 2500 hd with the 6.0. It has 200,000 miles on it and just today it was idling rough. After an hour of driving it at a stop light the service engine soon light came on then went back off as i went. It was rough in park /neutral/ and drive but would go away once under load. Then i started to hear a knocking/pinging from the engine at idle. it speed up and slowed with the rpms. i took it strait to a shop. They said the codes showed that i had over 2000 misfires. They removed the valve covers and said everything there was fine and that they were going to have to take off the intake to see whats wrong. Are they doing the right thing? i dont want them to charge me a fortune if its just an o2 senser or something like that.

Unfortunately, you will probably get bent over the counter and taken advantage of over this, they might chase a ghost bustin in that deep, seems like somethin more electrical to me rather than internal, but I dont take my word over theirs.

I might have taken a look at the spark plugs?

I would normaly try to fix myself but i was 70 miles away from home and scared to drive it any further. the place i took it to is a nationaly known rapair shop so i would hope they wouldn try to "bend me over" i would assume they had checked the most obvious things like plugs and sensors before they removed the intake.

yeah, how old are the wires and plugs? Maybe that simple. And don't assume. Ask them about obvious things like the wires, plugs and coils.

200,000 miles old. They havnt started anything yet. I will call in the morning to ask the obvious things. This problem happend after i drove for 7 straight hours. i have heard alot about piston slap on this forum. could this be that? im just arming myself with as much knowledge to tell the shop tomorrow so they look for the right thing.

There will be codes to point them in the right direction. Have them tell you what they are and what the fix is. It might be simple, maybe not so.

They knew what they were doing. Busted push rod. $1000.00. That's with oil change coolant change. New plugs / gaskets

Thats good.

Well spoke a little to soon. they showed me all push rods and springs and a few more were broke or bent. There replacing them all for 500 more. I said do it. Oh well might as well replace them all. Can't complain with this being the first major problem at 200,000 miles

Glad it turned out well, "shops" sometimes go to town and charge you crazy when something simple would have fixed it. Going off a misfire could be something simple, sounds like they knew what was going on.

Well they dug into it a little further and my cam was chewed up too. Getting an engine put in. There just charging me for a used engine with 70,000 miles and 9 hours of labor. Seems fair. It's all under 3 grand. Cause is most likely running low on oil. I had a real bad oil leak but just added oil between changes. Guess it got too low a few times.
