Recommended Posts

Bought a set of OEM tails today from a guy for $20! Been wanting to do this mod for weeks but didnt wanna screw mine up! If it works I will have a smoked OEM set and a mint OEM set. If its a epic fail then I am out $20 some paint and time! Only decision do I smoke the whole thing or mask off reverse light? Off to Orielly to buy supplies ..... wish me luck! Will post pics when complete!

mask off the reverse lights!

and don't forget to buy some gloss clear coat!!!

and watch the 2 part how to video on youtube. it is very informative!

i would recommend only 2 coats of the VHT. you don't want them too dark to get pulled over or fail state inspection.

THANKS!!!! I live in Alabama the law says here you must retain 60% of OEM visibility so hopefully I wont get hassled and we dont have state V inspects here!

Wanted to post an update, some comparative shots see what you think. I opted to shoot the whole lens and not mask off the reverse lights, looked much better to me this way. I also had a couple of mins lastnight to see the difference at night at first it doesnt seem to have deminished very much. Will take lots of side by side pics on the light differences. This is what I have so far!

how many coats did you do?

3 light coats, 2 didnt cover enough for my taste, I think because I did them so light, I was scared it would be too much! Had the wife put it in reverse and press the brakes last night. I was impressed with the visibility.

the main difference will be the visibility of the brake lights during the day. can you still see them during the day too?

Those look really dark. I have been kicking around the idea of doing that to mine, but unsure about any possible hassles from local law enforcement. I could see some litigation crazy punk rear ending me and then suing me for having obscure tails. But I do like the contrast that tinted tails have on white trucks. Waiting for pics of what it looks like w/ lights on...

Tails look great from an apperance stand point in my opinion. However I am still mixed on the saftey side of the issue, might end up putting my originals back on and selling the others

Hope the police and vehicle inspections are looser in your state as that'd get you stopped here in NH and they'd reject you for inspection.
