I Changed My Spark Plugs Today And Wires

Recommended Posts

I changed my spark plugs and wires today. I replaced them with OEM AC Delco parts since I haven't had any problems with them. I'm at 96,XXX miles. The driver's side was easy. The passengers side was more difficult because of the heater hoses, air conditioning hose and dip stick tube and bracket. The first three on the passenger side are manageable. But, that last one against the fire wall is a pain. That took a while. I had to get underneath the truck with a 3 inch extension and 6 inch extension along with a ratch that has a handle that you can extend.

I checked with the Dealer two weeks ago for plug wire prices. They wanted $168 for the set. I bought them from a GM Dealer on E-bay for $69 (plus $9 shipping). Here's a link if you're interested.

And I bought the sparks plugs from the same Dealer on E-bay for $45 (free shipping). Here's that link if you're interested:

Anyway, just thought I'd pass on the links to the good pricing that I found.

yep ill tell you from experience, they are the only ones that work with a gm truck, i replaced mine with some fancy dancy bosch ones once and it throughout my crank pos sensor and tps with all the misfires, ac delco iridiums are the best.

Avoid the Bosch! All the electrodes fell out of my platinum plugs, twice! And we're talking 10k miles on them!

Just did my plugs 2 days ago. Picked them up (AC- 41-110) at Oreilly's for 6.99ea US. Dealer here in Canada wanted $16.99 CDN each. left the wires on though (137,000km) a few service guys said no need to change them.

Ya, I concur, the pass side rear is the worst. Did 7 in 15min, the 8th took 10 min alone.

Thin arms can get at them from the top, 3" extension (I almost ripped the skin off my arms due to the AC pipes), but you need to stand on the 2nd rung of a ladder and lay across the coolant resevoir.

Dont forget to grease the plug tips and ceramic to help the boots slide on and off better.

Just a quick note on putting grease on plugs and ceramics. Make sure the wire is completely on, and do not connect the coil end until after you connect the plug end. You will need to rotate the wire quite a bit to ensure it is completely on the plug. If it is not completely on, the wire will pop off due to the air trapped in the end of the plug wire. Once the wire gets hot, the air expands, and because you lubricated it, the wire will pop off. Make sure you hear the click of the wire locking on to the spark plug.

I dont seem to get really good mpg and I'm wondering if it is the tune-up I did...

I replaced factory with E3's and got the "fuel saving" Granattelli wires.

WAS THIS A MISTAKE??

I'd for sure dump the E3's. Heard too many stories of people trying them with less than satisfactory results. Stick with AC or NGK

You can do a test. 100% agree with getting rid of the E-3's, get the AC/Delco's back in there and then see how the fuel millage is.

To the OP.. for future reference you might want to check out rockauto.

To the E3 plug buyer.....bad move. Trash the E3's and never buy anything from granatelli. just my .02

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
