454 Question

In a few years I wanna switch out my 350 with a 454. I have a 1998 Chevy K1500 4WD. I was wonder what I am going to have to change to get it all to work? Will any 454 fit in it? Could I build my own from a junk yard engine and put it in or will I have to buy a crate engine? What am I looking at for total costs?

Finding a 454 in junkyard is plane luck!.The swap would consist of some welding and fabing to get the mounts right since the 454 block is bigger. That and the ECM.May i ask why you want a 454?Its so much heavier. And the gains arent really worth it.Whats a matter with your vortec 350 they have tons of potential i would build up that vortec slap in a LT4 hot cam port the heads add a stall and get a custom tune and your running 13's easy. on street tires.

Doubt there will be any issues mounting the engine, it was still available in that generation. I would imagine the biggest benefit of the 454 is having torque at a livable rpm for towing.

ive done this swap but it was a 1990 k2500 and i switched over to a carb so i had no ecm issues to deal with. i actually put a 502 crate in but i just got all the accesory brackets, oil cooler lines, motor mounts, rad and shroud, ect. from gm dealer for the same model year truck bbc application. it all bolted right in. if you want a complete vortec intake efi system off a 1997 454 i have one used. besides the efi your trans is controled by the ecm so youll need a reflash/tune to make it all work. also your 4l60e wont last behind the bbc if you actualy use your truck, it will need to be built or better yet replaced with a 4l80e.
