New Truck, Vin Help Please

hey guys, been a while since ive posted on here. i had a 2006 sierra crew cab, slt, leather, z71, all the goodies. but it was a lemon, literally. bought it in october and its been back for about 4 grand in warranty work and im sick of it. sick of gm not being able to find the problems and ive decided to cut my losses and buy something a bit newer. i know these trucks are tough as ive had a couple older ones and theyve been nothing but good to me. so i bought an 09 z71 crew cab, 5.3, couldnt find a 6 liter, came with a trailer brake controller, towing mirrors, cloth heated interior which is gonna be a ncie change over the stick to the seat on long road trip leather my old truck had. few other goodies. and it rides so much nicer than the 06 did, plus thev4 engine mode thing is a nice option with the cost of gas going up. when the dealer brought up the build sheet for it it listed it as having a 6 spd tranny, which would be great over the old 4 spd, but when i drove it and put it into manual mode it wouldnt go past 4th gear. now i only used that in the city but was a little concerned with it. so perhaps someone could decode the vin for me.

dealer is delivering the truck to me tomorrow and because ive managed to break my right shin into 3 pieces i obviously wont be able to drive it for the next month or so, but id still like to see a full build list on it.

ive got the compnine site bookmarked and when i brought it up it keeps telling me ive used all my searches for the day, i tried google searching it but the best i could come up with was your basic vin decoder, where it was made, color, etc, id like a real in depth decoding like the compnine site provides. if someone could help me out id greatly appreciate it. thanks again

i went there before making the post, and i wanted a more information decoding, i know when i used the other site that i couldnt get to work it told me everything, that my old truck had the g80 locker etc etc, just wanted it put there.

thanks for clarifying that up for me, look forward to eventually driving it :smash:

as for problems, the truck was full of them. the biggest was the tranny. it woulc clunk going into second gear as if it had a shift kit but not always, and of course never when a gm tech was driving it. it would do it for days on end and then go away. it also leaked from the converter seal or around there. it would leak from the inspection cover down the bellhousing. so i brought it in twice, they said its not leaking there, they even put dye in the tranny fluid and i drove around for a month. i have a buddy who owns a garage so we checked it with his black light and the tranny lit up where the fresh fluid had leaked, bring it in, they tell ms its the pan gasket. how does the pan gasket leak fluid forward and then up a bell housing? i brought it in the other week because my oil drain plug was covered in tranny fluid. i took a picture, show the chick that works the counter, email it to her and she obviously doesnt show the mechanic. i get a call at noon saying its fixed and it was the oil drain plug that was leaking. like hell it was, the fluid was red. ishowed the tech and hes like yeah its red. great so he knows it but didnt look for it or didnt wanna do the work on it. so i just had enough and traded it in for this 09. hopefully i have better luck.

more off the top of my head, gm replaced the leaky third brake light, i left the tail gate and tonneau cover unlocked for them, yet they scratched the side of the truck right by the gas door at belt buckle height, then denied it and wouldnt fix it. i know there wasnt a scratch there, i fill it up more than once a week and look at that spot every time. 4wd switch wasnt working, they said it was fine, kept sticking in auto mode. replaced that, that one didnt have working lights, replaced it again. steering wheel control lights didnt work so they were replaced. trnny cooler line was leaking, they replaced the pan gasket, that was the first time. i said pan gasket isnt leaking, pop the hood show the tech the frame is covered in tranny fluid. so they fixed that. wheel bearing went but thats expected. alignment was out to lunch when i bought the truck but didnt notice it right away and they wouldnt do anything. back brakes were squeeling from day one and they just kept cleaning the drums, i eventually replaced the worn shoes, somehow they made it through safety. heated seats kept turning on by themselves. gm wouldnt do anything because it wouldnt do it for them, so i made a video of the seats turning on, then going to med, lo, off, then back on and repeating over and over again. still cost me diagnostic fees cause they couldnt figure it out.

key fob 1 would randomly not work for weeks at a time. changed the battery, still wouldnt work. i bring it in, the dic is showing key fob 1 battery low. i show the service guy that, he tests it with his little tester, says its fine. i go out side and it wont unlock the truck. i show him, he cant get it to unlock, but his tester says its fine so its fine and he wouldnt replace the fob. had no explanation for it. went back for it again and they finally replaced the fob. the feature all new gm vehicles have when you turn the key to start and let it off the engine cranks till it starts, that randomly doesnt work. i bring the manager out, show him the truck starts fine the first time by just jogging the key for a half second, and after that it doesnt do it. he says well maybe youre not holding the key long enough for it to catch, so i do it again and it cranks the engine three rotations i let off and it shuts off. come back later and just give the key a quick twist and she cranks on her own and fires up. he tells me some crap about how my truck isnt optioned with that feature, im like man i just showed you it works and then it doesnt work. they didnt fix that.

theres been a bunch of other crap, thats fresh on my mind, by the bills ive totaled up the truck has had right about 4 grand in warranty work done to it and i havent even owned it a year and theyre giving me a run around. i only bought the 09 because i got a decent deal on my trade in and worked some stuff out with the used car section who have been great to me, well the new guy there has been. hes even bringing the new truck to my house tomorrow and taking the old one back with him because i cant drive and itll save us from having to get my wife to go down there.

oh they also charged me to diagnose the engine knock the 5.3 has when its cold, said its common with these motors, i said if its common then why arent you fixing it. they said if they rebuild the motor itll just come back. so why charge me a half hour diagnostic fee?

oh wait remembered some more, both side headers have broken studs.

and my favorite, and youll love this. when i turn the hvac to full i get a whistle. real annoying whistle that goes away when i turn it down a couple clicks. i bring it to gm, again pay diagnostic. the retarded chick working there tries to make it sound like its a good things, says oh man its really something else, your trucks seals are so tight that it whistles when we turn the system on, but as soon as you open a door or crack a window it goes away. well thats great, but it makes noise on the hiway there fore not being that tight. i told her i wanted it fixed, said they dont know what it is and cant fix it. so i paid to diagnose it. so you can see why im annoyed with this truck, im glad i bought the warranty for it, its already paid for it self, but its the inconvenience of having to go there all the time and the 100 bucks it costs me per visit. so i drove the 09, it feels like a caddy compared to the 06, its a 1500, crew cab same as mine, but it rides so much smoother, it shifts smooth and feels like it makes more power.

oh and one last one, when id come to stop or start from a stop id feel a clunk, gm claims it as driveline slack. my 1990 z71 has 311000 km on it, was used to tow skidoos in the winter and the guy plowed his driveway with it. it didnt have drive line clunk like this, it was a much more solid truck. the new one doesnt do it either.

so theres my rant

You made the right choice trading it in. I bought a used 04 Blazer in 08 with 38,000 miles. I traded it for a new 2010 Silverado. I only put 20,000 miles on the Blazer, but I too had well over $4000 in repairs (much covered by the extended warranty). Nobody should have to get to know their repair guys that good.

Remember your buying USED vehicles and no telling what the previous owner did to it. Don't blame GM for a problem on a used vehicle.

ive owned many used vehicles, and not a single one has had this many issues. the problem isnt so much that the truck was breaking, it had 58000 km when i bought i and was plagued with issues. the problem is also largly how ive been treated by that dealer. i likely wont use that dealer for any warranty work the new truck needs but i needed them to get rid of this lemon.

my 1990 z71 had 300 000 km when i bought it and it had been used hard, plowed in the winter and towed the guys skidoos up north, i bought it, offroaded it, towed some stuff with it, and mind you i wrote it off in an accident but in the 11000 km i put on it it was flawless. and that thing was on a stock 350 and stock 700r4 tranny. when i bought it it didnt even need anything for a safety. i know these trucks are tough and should last but this thing was just plagued with problems. hell the power seat didnt even work on the pass side when i got it and i had to go back twice to get it fixed. lol. im just glad its done with. ill post pics of the new truck tomorrow, the dealer didnt get the right cover for the back and needed an extra day to get it done and theyre gonna deliver it to me tomorrow around 230. so expect pictures
