so guys, I have a 02 Z71 without locking diff, living in Pa. I need it, so I was thinking about installing an Aurbon unit, I do all my own work but have never tackled a diff replacement, dont even know if my axles will work or do I have to replace them also. my code for the diff is a G38, thanks for any help. randy

The axels are not an issue, it will be your access to a good press for installing the bearings is what is important. Since your truck is an 02, it would be wise to put in new pinion bearings while you have the old carrier out. The auburn unit will be your new carrier that ring gear will attach to. Dial gauges will be needed also to set your run out and end play. If your not comfortable with it, try to find a reputable shop to handle the work.

You have a Z71 or the base 4x4 model? I thought all the GMT 800's came with the G80?

yep its a z71 and vin # reafirms that, dont know why an auto company would build what they say is an off road package and not hot limited slip, but I looked long and hard for this one and would have bought it anyhow, it a ext cab with 8' bed, getting hard to find those

Richmond Gear makes a Powertrax and a no slip unit that can be installed without removing the ring and pinion. Haven't installed one yet, but from what I read, they get pretty good reviews. Looks like the powertrax is a more off road unit, and the no slip is more of a daily driver unit.

Apparently they go in pretty easy, a couple of hours, and no need to reset the gears.

As with synthetic oil, oil filters, and a host of other items, there a quite a few opinions on lockers. I just offered this up as an alternative to consider. When I get around to it, I will be installing a no-slip unit from Richmond.

I check my list of RPO Codes and couldn't find a code G38. Do you have a description for that code?

The G80 locking diff was not a part of the Z71 option till 2004. before then it was a stand alone option and the Z71 could come without the G80.

True, and I actually saw a new Z71 truck without the G80 on the local dealer's lot back in 2003 or so.
