Well I can now say that I have heard the knock

My buddies 01 2500hd 6.0 just started knocking last week.

It has 16000 miles on it .

It sounds worse than a Caterpillar engine it quiets down as it warms up though .

He was asking me if he should take it into the dealer and I told him they will just say its normal .

I would still take it in, so it is documented in case of future problems.

I agree, have to have the paper trail...documenting the service history is never a bad thing.  Be a pain especially if it's warrantied...you paid for it.
