Reducing Tire Pressure

My new Sierra 2500 has 70 psi air pressure in the rear tires and 55 psi in the fronts cold. I was told I could reduce the pressure when I'm not towing to smooth out the ride.

 

Question 1: What pressure can I safely reduce to?

 

Question 2: Can I re-program the TPMS for the lower pressures?

 

The tires are the OEM supplied Bridgestone Duravis LT265/70/R17, Load Rate E

I lowered mine with no issues, big difference in the ride. I did not have TPMS so I can't help you there.

 

Mid 50's in the front and I'd start with 50 in the rear and add a little at a time until the wear is all across the rear tires.

Huh???? By the time you notice that you tire is worn like that, they will be uneven and time to get new ones. Why wear out a set of tires because you played games with incorrect air pressures?

 

OP,There should be a minimum psi rating for your tires, check the sidewall/owners manual.

You don't put 10,000 miles on them, you can just drive a few miles and look at the tread and see the color difference on the tread. If it likes 1/2 inch on the in/out side being all the way across then add a couple of pounds. If its all the same let a couple of pounds out until you get the optimal amount in them.

 

It works for me, maybe not ever one though!!!!!

the DIC will signal the "check tire pressure" if the rear tires are below 60 psi. i had this problem in my old work truck. but 60 psi rides a lot smoother than 70!

You didn't hear this from me but you're allowed a 20% margin of error before the tpm system will turn the low tire pressure warning light/messages on.

 

Word from the wise, don't lower your front tire pressures. Leave them at the door sticker setting.
