I Made It

I bought a 1964 Continental convertible just South of Erie, PA and towed it home to Pittsburgh so I thought I'd share the experience and some photos. I have a 2006 Sierra 1500 but after feeling that the brakes are not adjusted correctly (stops a little sluggish) my father offered me to tow with his new 2011 Sierra 1500..same truck just newer with tow package but he has the 6 speed auto and 3.08:1 gear ratio. We wanted to see what she could do! I know I have posts about this trucks ability to tow a 5,600 lb car with a uhaul trailer but I needed it out of the previous owner's home asap since he had passed away (he sold it to me in December 2010 to clean out his belongings before his astranged wife took everything over!). After he passed I had to get it out when she took over the house it was stored at. Anyways, I could not find a Heavy Duty pickup to borrow at the time so this was the next best thing...brand new Sierra!

We were pleased to see it make the trip without any problems. The only complaint is the font end came up so much the steering shook a little around 50-55 then it went away at 60mph (never exceeded 60 mph). I think it was due to down force on the hood pushing the front end back down enough to stop the steering from shaking. I had one 18 wheeler not see my trailer when he merged onto my highway and almost came within a foot of side swiping my Lincoln and trailer but I was not about to swerve into the next lane but I did a get over as quickly as possible with a little sway but I recovered just fine. I gave the truck driver a nice long blast of the horn as he passed on the right...my wife's face turned white! Other than that I got great fuel mileage (90% highway) I think it was around 13mpg or better. I think its mostly down hill though from Erie to Pittsburgh. Here are some photos. Thanks for all the help and advice but I do not recommend doing this on a long trip with this much weight and a half ton! I have a lot of experience driving with trailers since I am a landscaper but if you do not have a lot of experience, for safetys sake, don't tow this much till you have some. These photos were taking when stopped so the leg is down on the trailer to reduce stress on the truck springs when it sat on the street overnight. I also hit up a car cruise on the way in and opened the doors and trunk.

I love those cars, my uncle had a black on black on black 1963, with a 351 Windser in it, thing was pure sex, all that chrome and black, and the suiside doors, a American classic for the ages, bakc when Lincoln was a top tier brand.

Those are sweet cars. Don't see many around.

Looks good and level. Hard to believe is took much weight off the front tires. Should check that out a little more.

I just bought a 63 Impala and towed it 3 hours with my 04 Silverado 4.8. I used that U-Haul trailer also. Man, I (as I'm sure did you) was worried the Impala wasn't going to fit on the damn trailer. I thought those trailers did a really good job though. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
