Service Air Bag Signal Help

Dear Guys/Girls: I need your help. I changed my intermediate steering shaft last night. I got in today to go to work and back out of garage and felt a little resistance in the steering wheel and then it freed up. Now the service air bag signal comes up on the DIC. I think my kid who was helping me may have turned the steering wheel around or something. Can you help me diagnose how to check on this? And how do you take the steering wheel apart? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry to say, but your air bag needs to be serviced by the dealer. Some wiring to the airbag has been damaged. When you do this you have to keep the wheel in the same spot, or this damage can occur. I did the same thing and it was $600. OUCH

Buy a new SIR coil from GM and install it yourself. It's not a hard job and no where near paying $600 for. A copy of the service manual will help you along the way, good luck.

Well i looked around a bit and it looks like the SIR coil is the problem. How do you the SIR disable procedure. Is it just removing the negative terminal from the battery? And I'm still looking for the part number for the SIR coil. Thanks.

Well I thought I would update you all here. I got a new SIR coil off e-bay for 57.00 dollars shipped. The job was very easy to do. Maybe 45 minutes to do. Thank you for the diagnosis CT77. You just saved me over 500.00. My local dealer wanted 232.00 just for the coil. I said no way. They thought they had one at my local auto zone. They input the right truck in the computer but as it turned out it was the wrong coil. If your truck is 1500 series or non HD 2500, it has a dual stage air bag. HD trucks have a single stage air bag. I took it apart and got the correct part number off the coil and ordered it on e-bay.

hold on cowboy,how do you think you have the same problem as buddy did? did you have it diag'd yet ?

or are you goin to throw parts at your truck?

your getting alittle ahead of yourself ,,spend money wisely and get it looked by a guy who has experience working on SIR systems,that would be a dealer or a good corner garage,

dont rush to the internet and assume its the same,not cool bro !! lol
