Warantee Questions?

I recently changed from the stock 265/70r17 to 285/70r17's and it has left a lot to be desired. Is there a way tp change gear ratio's without sacrificing warantee coverage?

Any legitimate help is appreciated.

Have GM do it :dunno: But with that said, your entire warranty isn't gone. Its just gone for the parts you changed. If you stick with a gear ratio GM offers, they can't argue to much.

Changing out the rear gear won't affect the warranty for the rest of the truck. If the rear end were to go bad, you'd be out of luck there, but that's not likely. Most warranty repairs would proceed without the dealer knowing the rear gear was ever toughed. How would they even know if you didn;t tell them?

True... Although if I ever DID have a problem with the diff, It would be interesting to explain... especially since some dealers think they can void your warantee for whatever.

One rep told me my levelling kit would void my warantee. I asked my salesman and he told m FU@% no, GM installs leveling kits on lots of trucks with warantee.

So I think i would be fine. Im just not confident paying GM to do it, nor do i have time to have my truck down for a week. I would do it myself, But I've never had a carrier apart before. (like to set lash, preload, etc)

I would sure hate to screw up a 2000 dollar diff. Or a 3500 dollar one. (front)

gear sets are only like 500 for both diffs here in town, but I might consider ordering from yukon or Randys.

I know I'm sure tired of driving this thing with no power. And I refuse to drive around in 3rd.

I suppose i may even be able to sell my old gear sets. After all they only have 6k miles on em.

is there tech articles on diffy setups on these trucks? (specifically the front 8.25", and the rear 8.5"?)

OOH I had another question! Anyone know where to find transmission gear ratios? 4 speed, O/D? I want to go 4.10's, but my dad told me a 3.73 would be plenty. im currently around 1500 RPM@ 65. I should be around 1700, 1800. I want to be able to cruise at 75-85 again.

GM does not install leveling kits! Dealers might and dealers can more or less do what they want IF they sell you the truck.

You can change the rear end ratio all you want but if it ever needs to be repaired or replaced they are going to order and use parts which the VIN build indicates came on the vehicle. For instance, if the built says it came with a 3.08 ratio and you installed a 3.73, GM is only going to replace it with a 3.08 assuming they are unaware you changed it.

NOTE-Dealers CANNOT void a warranty. They can deny a claim under the warranty. Warranties give you certain legal rights that no dealer can take away.

If you have never replaced a ring and pinion and do no thave the special tools needed I would take to the dealer or another capable shop. The ECM and will need to be programmed for the new gear ratio also.

Also keep in mind that with 4 wheel drive the gear rato for the front wheels have to be compatible with the rear gear ratio.

+1 on doing it yourself ,you will mess it up !! its not for a beginner and it wont stay at a dealer for a week,

i think you are wasting your money,IMO

You're right, I apologize, That was worded wrong. The dealer I use does lots of levelling kits.

Also, If I changed ratios, I wouldn't take it to the dealer for diff warantee, and even if I did, I would tell them the ratio has been chaged before letting them replace it.

I Understand that proper gear setup is necessary, however I Think the dealer would need a horrendous amount to do the job. Why would the ECM need reprogramming?

I factored this in. Ring an pinion kits for BOTH diffs here is under 1000 dollars, Including seals, shims, everything.

At the dealer, yes, very expensive. however, I do have plenty of tools, (Im an apprentice @ peterbilt)

and if you drove a stock 4.8 with 33" tires, you wouldn't say it's "wasting my money"

@ 70 mph, it struggles to hold O/D. Prior to the tire change, It was great.
