5.3L rebuild

I'm in the process of pulling the engine on my 2002 Yukon XL, and was wondering if the CD version of the Helm book is worth a crap or should I stick with paper? The reason I ask is that I went through a rebuild on a 97 taurus with the yamaha motor and bought the CD version, what a piece of s*#$t. Search function wasn't worth crap and was just all around hard to use. I have paper version's for my saturn and 95 GMC Sierra and although it takes a little effort to find stuff, every thing is there.

These engines last so long and so many are available used... why not swap a low mileage example in? They are plenty cheap.

I figure that if I'm going to sink a grand into a 50-70,000 miles motor, I'll just go the xtra 700 or so the make it new or close as I can afford anyway.

Nothing wrong with that. Just offering up a suggestion. Might be a good time for a cam update!

Good luck with it.

That's exactly what I'm thinking . Any suggestion? Trying to stay stock maybe get a little better mileage. plan on doing lifters, cam, crank and rod bearings, having the block checked. Having the crank turned and polished, any thought on balancing it, some guy at the parts store said it's a waste of money. depending on how the heads check out , maybe a good valve job and have a little shaved off.

edit; the financial adviser was looking over my shoulder and just walked away mumbling something about cost over runs already. Oh, and a high volume oil pump.

I always balance. You would be surprised how far off parts can be, even new. You balance your tires don't you? Nuff said.

If your block is farked, do as Zem suggested, get a low mileage engine for the swap.

that was the back-up plan. I'll find out this morning. The machinist quoted me 150.00 on the block work if he doesn't have to sleeve the cylinder. 85 to make the crank factory spec.

The shop guy said that the bore looked good, no problems there, found a spot inside the block where the rod whipped around and dented one of the oil passages, said that he'll pressure test it and if it holds it's good. I asked about restricting volume, stated that if the pressure holds he'll run a mill down the passage to open it up (plugs at both ends of the block for this passage) forgot to take a pic of the dent before I dropped it off.

Getting bored waitin' around for the block, found a couple of rust spots on fire wall, which turned into holes. passenger side right below ac dryer. heat shield mounted to fire wall was catching ac condensate drain water directing it to seam in cab spot weld seam. thinking about ways to fix it. definitely adding extension to drain line

How many miles did you have before the failure?
