Bed Cover Question

Getting ready to purchase a GMC 3500HD Denali. When not hauling a 5th wheel I want a bed cover that's lockable that I can put on the truck and remove without much fanfare. Is this something that's available through GMC, or elsewhere? You've probably figured it out, but just in case, I am a rookie.

Any suggestions?

I bought the GM hard folding cover with the premium convertible type material and so far I really like it. It can be removed very quickly by folding it, unlatching the front and lift off. I can't say how the material will hold up in the weather over time but I park in a garage so it won't be a problem for me.

 

I looked at several folding hard covers that did not have the material over the hard part of the cover and it just looked like a lot of potential for leaks and I just did not like the looks of them.

 

I had a Pace Edwards roll top on my 1998 and mostly liked it but keeping the drains open was a problem.

Backflip will fold up to the back window so you font have to remove it

Gotta love those Bakflips! To make it lockable, you need to install a locking tailgate latch though...no locking mechanism on the cover.

I fogot about the locking part, my truck came with locking tailgate

 

I will say i did just buy mine last week and the best prices i could find were on amazon

I have a Fold-a-cover G4 Elite on my truck. I love this cover in all ways but 1. The great points are that it is locking, it folds foward and doesn't block vision out the rear glass, although it doesn't give you access to the forward most part of the bed for tall objects. The bad part is that it isn't nearly as waterproof as it should be. I had an ARE hard fiberglass cover on my last truck, and it never leaked a drop. It also wasn't removable.

GP-Silverado - Thanks for the info. The guys with the Backflip and GM cover didn't mention wheter or not they had leaking problems. Also, I wonder about noise - both from wind and bumps.

Mines only been on my truck for 2 days, my brother has had his on his f150 for 4 years with out leaks tho. Also you dont need to fold it to the window. Every panel latches, so you can open it only as far as you need

GM cover, no leaks, no noise.

Thanks again, guys. I certainly appreciate the info. Looks like one of the hardest things to do will be making a decision between the two. They both sound great!

GM's locking tailgate is a real joke. It locks, however, all anyone needs to do is to pull out the plastic inserts in the cover and it [the plastic cover] will come off. Then, one can unlock the tailgate with a flick of a lever and then open it. The cover should be metal instead of plastic and should be rivited to the tailgate.

 

I found this out when my tailgate lock cover fell off after I was driving over some rough terrain on my farm. After missing the cover, I backtracked my route and found the cover in the grass.

It's about 99% at keeping water out. I'm also using a tailgate seal to help with that.

      Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
