is there a way to id whats in an axle if the rpo codes arent present

Posted

Yes there is. It won't be perfect but it will be close.

You'll need a friend for this.

Mark the drive shaft and one rear tire with chalk. Count the # of drive shaft rotations per 1 tire rotation. You'll then have a ratio of x.x:1

well... my main concern is the locker or not. i cracked it open but i dont now what the locker looks like verses open

its just a rear end laying in a guys garage. he has engine and trans too. it was out of a wrecked truck

could someone post up pics of what an open carrier looks like vs a g80

pics of a G80:

if you see springs it's a G80. If all you really see is some small gears in the carrier housing it's an open differential.

Hope that helps

on edit:

I just noticed that this is not from a 1/2 ton truck, however I can assure you that it is the same in appearance.

i saw the spiders, i saw what looks like a screw with a spring on it. moving the axle it felt posi'd up but i dont have a lot of experience with that stuff

this is the exact view you are looking for:

you can see spider gears in both assemblies, but the G80 has a whole lot more going on. There is no spring in the open rear setup.

you won't be able to activate the locker by hand, at slower speeds you can't spin it fast enough (by hand) to make it lock. The G80 locks by centrifugal force. The counter weight must be flung fast enough to engage (this is also why they fail catastrophically, the weight flings out too fast under abuse conditions).

I thought he was looking for a pic of an open diff? As in no G80?

making the presumption that he is referring to a stock differential: identifying one would exclude the other. I hoped most people would be able to follow that logic without having it explained.

and for the record, there is extra data given in text to help identify the open carrier. Perhaps you have a picture of an open carrier since you seem to be fluent on the subject?

do i didnt take one. it has been sitting for a year. im not to sure im gonna follow thru and buy it. im just going to save up for a detroit locker.

i may go e locker. the price isnt that much different than the detroit. the arb air locker costs a lot

Sorry!

I'm not fluent, I recognize the g80 ONLY because of changing my diff fluid a short time ago. I wasn't trying to be a smarty, however I am infinitely curious to learn EVERYTHING I can about my truck & others & pictures help a lot. Before I did the fluid change you could of posted that picture & told me that WAS an open differential & I would've believed it. I come here to learn not to critique the pro's.

its fine i have only seen inside the diffs of semi's, and the one i was looking at buying. i have an open but i havent changed my fluid so i couldnt tell you if it looked the same as the one i wanted to buy or not. but an e-locker or air locker do seem to be the better way to go. or hell a trutrac for the price. when taxes come i may pull the trigger on an e-locker and 3.73's or 4.10's im not sure yet.

An e locker would be good too. I personally wouldn't want a Detroit in my daily driver, that's all. Id like for it to be selectable.
