My 2000 did the same thing. Service 4x4 light came on and I couldn't switch out of 2wd. This seems to be a very common issue with these switches. Easy fix if you can solder.

Remove switch from dash (yes, the switch you use for auto, 2wd, 4wd hi/low) open the back of the switch carefully using a small flathead screwdriver. Remove some of the old solder from all the contacts (I think mine had nine contacts), resolder then reinstall. I did this over 2 years ago and have no issues since.

If you can't solder, buy a new switch. Rockauto.com has a switch for my 2000 for only $32, dealer price was $50.

I would try the switch first before I paid $80+ for a diagnosis.

My 2006 did the same thing... I tried the solder trick on the switch, but did not fix. Mine ended up being the transfer case position senser. Part was about $100 from the dealer (only place to get it, NAPA and the like don't carry it). Changing it wasn't bad, some people say to drop the drive shaft, but I put the transfer case in neutral and was able to turn the drive shaft around a bit and wiggle out the housing that holds the position sensor. If your not really mechanically inclined I don't know that I would recommend doing it your self, but it is possible.

Search this site for the transfer case position senser (sensor) and you will find a ton of information. I know somebody posted pictures of it at some time, I don't remember where, might have been a tech article.

Hope this helps......

Hello,

Did your truck loose power while the Service 4WD light was on. Mine is on and the truck, randomly looses power, wont go over 25mph. But then you turn the truck off then back on and it might drive fine or not. Does anybody have any experience with this issue?

When you say the truck loses power, is it after you tried messing with the switch? I realized that if I hit the switch when the Service 4x4 light comes on, the next time you start the truck, it might be in 4-lo. Try resetting the switch to 2 hi if it is an intermittent issue.

Ok, let me simplify my response by elaborating a little.

If I start my truck and the Service 4WD message came on, sometimes the 2WD HI is lit up and sometimes the entire module is dark. If you try changing the setting to see if the switch responds and it doesn't, be aware that the next time you start your truck, the switch might set to the last button you pushed when testing the switch. My switch is intermittent. If I start the truck and get the message, I may turn off the truck and restart it. By doing that, the switch now works and allows me to go into 4HI or AUTO, etc. I have noticed that if I start my truck and get the message, pressing a button does nothing. If I press 4HI as the last button, then restart my vehicle, I've noticed that when the switch does respond, it's now in 4HI. Understand?
