Rear gear questions

I was saying to run the test in your truck so you have an idea of where the RPM's are at the tire size you have in 4th gear. Then looking at the chart... and looking at the same tire size, but 4.10 gears... it will show you the exact difference between the 2 gear sets in 4th gear.

It should give you a good handle on what the gear swap will do to your RPM's

Thankyou for all of your help .

So why the 4.10s I do mostly highway driving and was thinking 3.73s would be good enough but like I said I dont really know what I am talking about. I do have a 5spd manual transmission dont know if that makes a difference with the gear ratio comparing it to the 4 speeds auto on what I want to have. Also the PCM thing how much does that cost to reprogram and why do I need to do that ? So far guys thanks for the info but more is the better . what is a master rebuild kit ? or master install kit

You do not need to do this on a standard transmission, only on automatics. On a standard transmission YOU are the shift points, in an auto transmission the computor controls the shifts.

4.10's and if your paying for some one to install, your looking at about $500-$600 (includes master rebuild kit, gears, and labor). You'll also need to reprogram your PCM for the gear update.

I respectfully disagree, if he has a standard transmission, what parameters is he changing in the PCM?

When I did a gear change in Sara (2001 Camaro A4), the shift points in the PCM needed adjusting, along with other paramaters when I dropped in a 3200 stall :)

The speedo is PCM controlled.

Yes sir, I understand this, and on a manual transmission it will not make a bit of difference in drive ability, where as on an automatic transmission, the PCM uses both the RPM and the Speedometer to calculate the shift point.

Understood. Just pointing out that the speedo calibration will change, and is controlled via the PCM. Up to the OP as to whether he cares.

I had a 2005 Silverado 2wd with 4.10 gears adn a 6.0L engine and auto tranny. Got 11 mpg hiway or city....ouch. Tach ran at 2300-2400 at 65-70 mph. Definitely more gear than I ever needed. BUT, I could tow anything.

I agree the speedometer will be off and the PCM will need to be reset, or get a hand held programmer.
