seatbelt problem

I have a 2011 silverado 1500 z71 extended cab. Yesterday I rear ended another car and had an issue with seatbelt. My son who is 5 was sitting behind me in booster car seat with seat belt on. When I made impact with car in front he smashed face on back of my seat (he is fine). Seat belt did not engage. Took to dealer this morning and on initial inspection they seemed to agree that seatbelts were not grabing like they should, will have to bring back on Monday so they can properly inspect. My question is this, has anyone else had a problem with there seat belt? My wife has complained since we got truck that she thought something was not right with passenger belt. Wondering if flaw with design or just mine. Any feedback appreciated.

Glad your son is okay. The seat belts should lock under hard deceleration (inertia lock). I've honestly had so few rear passengers I can't say I've ever tested them.

 

I don't have kids but I was under the impression that with kids in boosters you were supposed to pull the belt out all the way and then let it ratchet back in so it could not be pulled forward (ie not letting your son lean forward in the seat) until the belt was unbuckled and retracted fully to let the lock reset.

I have a 2004 and I have the opposite problem more so with the front passenger seat. It looks while just sitting there, if you go to learn forward...it's kind of 'stuck'. Not trying to hijack your thread.....I've heard a few people complain about the seat belt mechanisms. Maybe check for a recall? Though I'd assume the dealer already looked it up when you took it in.

Glad he is OK. Accidents with loved ones in the car is always scarry. The owners manual will tell you the proper procedure... as manufactures dont seem to be consistent on the process. Some require clips, some pull out locking, some have anchore points the seat clips to.

 

I have seen dirt and gunk build up on the seat belt rewinder cause that problem, but ususally only in high mileage older rigs. Your looks to be new.

I'm very glad your little man was okay. My kids are out of car and booster seats (thank God) but on all the Chevy trucks I have owned previously I pulled the belt out all the way until it retracted. I assume (you know what that means) that is is still the same on the newer trucks.

 

I know how you feel. The only accident I've ever had was when my oldest son was almost 2. I T-boned a Ford Ranger that was in the oncoming lane and made a left turn in front of me with no warning. I didn't even have time to hit the brakes. Hit at about 50 MPH. My son, wife, nor me had a scratch, bump or even seat belt burn. I was driving a Subaru Legacy and since that time I've been sold on Subaru cars (their crash ratings are well deserved in my opinion)....sorry to rattle on, but your story brought back memories. Again glad everyone is okay.

Sorry to hear that. Really glad the little guy was not injured. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. If it were my son, I would definately have GM Corp. on the phone right away to make them aware of this problem.
