Nitrogen filled tires????? I call BS

Our Acadia came with N2 in the tires. Don't really notice any difference.

The individual gas constant for N2 is actually larger than for DRY air so this indicates that the pressure of N2 actually changes more with temperature than for dry air. Dry is the key word here. If there is a chemist onboard, correct me if wrong and explain.

 

N2 in street tires is just a money maker.

 

 

I'm pretty sure that the specific heat for N2 is a hair higher than dry air, meaning it can absorb more heat per gram. It's such a small difference, however, that it's a "no never mind". I have zero experience with it, but the idea is that N2 runs at a more constant temp/pressure and doesn't react w/ the rubber (keeping more constant pressure). I can see why an Indy car would like this, since 1/2 psi may be the difference between winning and coming in 10th.

 

Consumer Reports did a little self-test a while back, and found that N2 tires lost ~1.3% less pressure over 1 year (that's one point two percent). Me thinks I'll keep my air compressors.

Dude what on earth are you talking about? The green stem caps are just green to indicate the tire has N2 in it, not because it's a "green" thing to do.

I did not say that it meant it was a "green" friendly product. What I suggested was they chose that colour make people think it is a "green" friendly product. There are other colours to choose from, yet they chose the one colour that just happens to be symbolic colour of environmentally safe products. Ask around and see what you get for an answer to the question "why is the cap green?". And just so we are clear here, I know it is not a "green" product, just saying it is a logical assumption that many will make.

I think he knows that but they could of picked any color if its a marketing gimmick green is the best choice. Most going "green" products are green so on the off chance a person somehow might relate that to being a more friendly product just because its green.

typical "air" is 79% Nitrogen. With that in mind, know that there is no way to completely purge all air from a tire in the mounting process, therefore the tire is already "contaminated". The "Nitrogen" they are pumping in is from a Nitrogen concentrator. They are not 100% efficient (one's in tire shops are typically 95% efficient). In the end there is very little difference from pumping in Nitrogen or plain ole atmospheric air.
