would have had it back this evening but they didn't have the servo and I think the converter on hand

Chris didn't you put that tranny in pretty recently?

About 8 months ago. It was a cheap one with 6 month warranty. I paid 1000 for it. This rebuild is $1750 and has a 2 year warranty

Can't buy one because I have no money. Having this transmission rebuilt is going to wipe out what I have. Nothing but ramen for the next 2 weeks. Don't have the luxury of 2 vehicles

WOW those clutches were SMOKED!! Must've been that way for quite a while - to get that bad doesn't happen overnight. Was probably pretty close to gone when you got it. At least you got 8 months out of it - that's pretty good all things considered.

 

 

 

Been busy over here. Put upper and lower ball joints, rotors, pads, and calipers in my buddy's '98 Ram 2500 with the Dana 60 axle. Was a hell of a job. Had to waste over an hour searching for a store that carried big sockets. Thank God they just put a couple Tractor Supply stores in close by - they had EVERYTHING we needed and then some! Got a 3/4" breaker bar, a 1-11/16" 3/4" drive socket, and a 12-point 1/2" drive socket for the hub ( we broke my 20 year old Snap-On 1/2" drive to 3/8" drive reducer, and twisted a 3" 3/8" extension. That Dana 60 is one BIG SOB! I've been used to working on small engines for the past 8 years - this thing is a tank, lol. Took us 15 hours - most of that due to having to fuss with my home-built waste oil burner. I got a batch of oil that was loaded with rust, and it plugged my screen up. It also had alot of sludge in it, which cause the fire to become erratic, and shoot flames out the front, LOL. It's not to "code" I guess you could say ...

 

 

We got hit with that blizzard yesterday - spent about 4 hours digging out from that, and breaking my equipment in the process. The S10 plow truck blew a rear wheel cylinder, and what was left of the exhaust. Then, since I was plowing at night, the windows were all fogged up, and I'm as blind as a bat, I backed into a tree and wiped out the passenger side mirror. I'm now a BIG fan of Gorilla tape! The stuff didn't budge, but instead busted the mirror right in 2! :thumbs::lol:

 

Then took out the snowblower to widen the street, and make some paths out back - shifter mechanism spit a nut out into the snow, never to be seen again. Shift linkage dragging on the ground behind it. Found another nut that fit, and ran that for a while, but didn't like the sloppy shifter ... so dug up some correct sized washers and stacked them up to take up the play. Once I got that all set, I gave the nut a little extra torque, so it wouldn't come loose again .... and, SNAP! That was the end of that! :sick:

 

Welded a stud back onto the mechanism and got that working again. I found the play was caused by a plastic bushing that just wore and fell out. Thing is 28 years old, so no surprise there. Anyway, got it working and finished one little section I gave up on last night. Right as I finished that pass, it spit the belt off. Had to make a quick adjustment, and all is well there again.

 

 

 

You guys that live where it doesn't snow have no idea how easy you've got it!

4th would occasionally slip for most of the time I had that transmission. I was never able to replicate it on demand

Ahh, that's how they got so bad. Slippage makes a TON of heat & speeds up the wear process times 10.

 

I'd imagine that thing got pretty noisy in 3rd and 4th at the end there - lots of noise, and no forward motion?

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
