Ahh, that's how they got so bad. Slippage makes a TON of heat & speeds up the wear process times 10.

I'd imagine that thing got pretty noisy in 3rd and 4th at the end there - lots of noise, and no forward motion?

I was driving with windows up and music loud. Wen the noise caught my attention, it was because the engine was turning 4000 rpm.

Yikes! Yeah that'll get your attention!

Just for that reason, every so often I'll turn the radio off as I leave a light or stop sign, or merge onto the highway, just to see if anything is going on that shouldn't be. I've had the radio cranked and lost an entire exhaust system before, LOL - the vibration and rumbling got my attention quick. Was probably dragging on the road for 10 miles, shooting sparks everywhere for all I know.

Recently, I never heard one of my trailer ramps slide out the back on the highway. Got to my destination with one ramp. Luckily the guy had his own trailer, so I borrowed his to load up the vehicle. I was waiting for that phone call from the MA State Police after that - probably came off on the MA Pike or 495 in the middle of traffic! Ever since then, I will turn the radio down at random times and listen for a minute.

Late at night, I had music up. I was just on my way home. It is a 40 mile drive with about 30 of it on a 2 lane hwy. I was doing 65 with cruise on when it let go

I normally have mine cranked any time I'm in the truck. Been doing that since I was 16 with cassette tapes. :)

Keeps me sane whenever I have to venture out of my neighborhood. Although ... it encourages speeding. :D

Pshhhh, dragging an exhaust is day 2 day business for this cool cat. Saw this on my way home from work. Guy was pulling a dual axel trailer with no tire on the front passenger wheel. He was going about 55-65mpg too.

Been there, done that! That's why I have a pair of Viar compressors in my truck now.

I was running a Toyota Tacoma up to Derby, VT - just 5 miles from the QC border. At a fill up on 91 northbound, I noticed my right front axle's tire going soft. Couldn't get to the air hose due to all the cars and trucks the garage had parked in front of it. So I go to the next exit - wasted half an hour and a bunch of fuel looking for air - nothing. So get off the exit after that one - drove 30 miles down the road. Finally found a gas station - air pump is out of order! I was livid. Just got on the highway and hoped for the best.

Was actually surprised I made it as far as I did - 100 miles - before the tire got so hot it delaminated inside, and blew out. Had no spare, and no tools! Used the truck's factory jack kit - luckily the lug wrench just barely fit (too big, but was able to get the nuts off without stripping them). Had to lay on my belly in the dirt next to dirty diapers and all kinds of trash along the side of the highway to get that crappy bottle jack under the axle. Every time I turned the handle, I got a shovelful of sand down my shirt. Finally got it up enough to pull the wheel off. Was still so hot I couldn't hold it! Had to use rags to pick the thing up and toss it in back!

Luckily my setup allowed the axle to hang about 5" above the pavement, so no sparks, but I had no suspension on that side, and the center pivot brace was wedged right up into the frame for the next 350 miles. Delivered the truck no problem, and made it the 300 miles back home. What an adventure! :D

Lesson learned! Installed the compressor kit, and I now carry an assortment of tools, AND a spare.

In my shop this morning I refurbished a 2004 Silverado Duramax cluster.

This guy bought his truck used with 158000Kms so he thought because that's what the cluster said. Don't know what he's going to think when I tell him this isn't the cluster from his truck. Previous owner swapped the cluster because it either failed or because he wanted to show that the truck had lower kilometers than it really had. He even changed the back cover that has the date stamped on it so it would look like it was the original cluster. But I've done enough of these to know this cluster is out of an 05. I feel bad for these people that trust used car dealers.

Manufacture date was April 2004 according to date stamp.

04 Would have 2 glass diodes and 2 surface mount and a different regulator ( 7 leads ).

This one had 4 surface mounted diodes and the regulator is different ( 5 leads ) and flipped around, they only started producing these in September of 04

All this just to inform you for what to look for, an 03 would have 4 glass diodes.

Talk about micro surgery, parts in electronic goods are getting smaller and smaller, I just replaced a switch in a FOB that was soldered in place at 4 corners. The original switch is pictured here with a dime as reference.
