Is synthetic motor oil the best for me

Recommended Posts

Ok so I'm that guy that no matter what oil I use I'm going to change it at 3k-4k, so far I have only been using mobil 1. I just can't get myself to let the oil stay in there for 5/7k miles so I'm probably waisting my money running full synthetic. Oddly enough my manual says nothing about dexos, it does say to use oil that is 5w30, meets gm spec 6094m, and displays the star burst symbol, and it is a 2011 Sierra manual so as long as I keep the manual I'm not to concerned with warranty issues after all yellow bottle meets all those specs mentioned in my manual, once again what do you guys think?

Oh and by the way i do a lot of short trips to work and a lot of the times the engine temp doesn't get to normal operating temp, I believe that 3k OCI are the best way to go for me, what do y'all think.

There is no need to change your oil every 3-4K miles. Running the Mobil 1 to 6K or 7K is ok for the truck. I drive in stop and go, very hot summers, and I've never changed my oil before 6,000 miles. If everyone would do this on newer vehicles we wouldn't have a need to recycle as often all the oil taken out prematurely of vehicles. I find it hard to believe your manual does not refer to Dexos certification with it being a 2011. My 2011 Silverado does refer to Dexos. If you're going to change the oil that often, just use the Dexos oil from the dealer which is a semi-synthetic.

I'll post a pic of my manual, maybe it was made (the manual) right at the beginning of 2011 a little bit before dexos, but like I said I'll post a pic, I'm not worried about stop and go traffic but rather short trips like less than 3 miles some days to and from work so a mile and a half both ways.

My manual, in section 10-10 within vehicle care says to "use and ask for engine oils with the dexos certification mark." This vehicle was filled at the factory with dexos-approved engine oil.

Anway, I think the point is that you don't have to change your oil as frequently as you do. Vehicles today are engineered much better and you would be doing the environment a favor.

Have an oil sample tested. Then you'll have your answer
