Well after a lightning strike, a new internet modem, and new computer, I'm back up and running. What a pain in the A$$. I did manage to get my hard drive installed in an external case and saves all my files. Hit came through the phone line. I now have a battery back up, surge protector and phone surge protector in 1. Also have a back up saved on external hard drive. I don't wanna go through that again. Anyone else had the pleasure of upgrading when they didn't want to? lol

Not recently but several years ago we took a hit that blew every electronic device in the house except a few battery powered devices.. Also strange things like welded light switches in one position, vaporized burglar alarm wiring, Up until a couple of years ago, I was still finding things damaged.

We came home from work and knew something was up when the the TV antenna elements were scattered around the yard.

Make a disk backup and keep it in your gun safe!

I didn't have the pleasure per say of upgrading, but I did go through a pain staking process of recovering files off my external hard drive that one day out of the blue crapped out on me. I was able to save a few files, but wind up paying $2k on a data recovery team to recover the remaining. You ask why? Here is why... seeing its the digital age, I no longer own a camera that requires film to be develop, all my cams are digital so I had pictures on there of my first born child being born that I didn't and couldnt loose. Those are snapshot memories that you can't get back. Lessons learned from this, back your shit up. I now have an external hard drive that never stays on and only gets fired up once ever two weeks to back up my current internal 1 TB drive that I store all my photos and docs and mp3s.

It seems everybody has to learn the hard way the undeniable fact of electronic media storage (hard drives, flash cards, USB sticks, etc) and that fact is -

The question is not IF it will fail, it but WHEN will it fail.

Welcome back, yes I've had the "pleasure" of replacement without prior request. The house I just moved out of had a surge come through the line and took out my DTV box, the TV power cable and the surge protector everything was plugged into. Fortunately the cable box was covered, the TV power cable was detachable so easy replacment and the surge protector took the brunt of the surge and was quickly replaced as well. Growing up on farm country PA, we always had to unplug because of surges or strikes on the cable, phone and/or electric. Lost more than a few devices along the way.
