Oil leak on gmt 900?

My 2004 developed the same problem (alas, under the 3/36 warranty structure of that time). I never fooled with it. It has never leaked enough to have even a noticable amount of change on the dipstick. I figure something else will get f'ed up if they go in there.

I really dont like the thoughts of those monkeys at the dealer pulling my trans out and working on it. I guess I will let them though.

pulling a tranny is kids stuff

Sorry to offend you Rob. After some experiences with the dealer closest to me I hate to let them do the job. I am aware there are skilled people working in the shops at dealerships but I dont feel that this one is one of the better ones.

MIke---it's most likely the seal. I'm dealing with the exact same thing. I had the same leak not too long ago and had the rear main seal replaced, but...as it was mentioned...they put the same g*******mn type of seal back in, so now it's going to be in for a second time. Oddly enough....i also noticed another problem when i was inspecting mine today...i'll attach a photo and tell me what you see.

My dealership is taking care of it, but trust me, i'm none too happy...the first seal was replaced at 24,500 miles...and i've got 38,300 on it now.

Tell me what you see in that photo...and if it wouldn't piss you off...

Wow is that a cracked housing?

Mike--

I think it is. I've been chasing this oil leak problem for about 10k miles+ now. What baffled me was how the hell oil was getting on TOP of the oil filter assembly...the sides of it yeah i can understand that but..the top?....I'm usually very neurotic about making sure i wipe off all the excess/spillage of oil when i do an oil change, i don't torque the oil filter down, and i just happened to notice that last night----because it was at the dealer for the oil leak and they wanted to verify it wasn't the oil filter so they put a ac delco one back on (and of course told them i'd be back in the morning because it would be leaking again)...not even 2 hours after leaving the dealership....it was leaking (that photo was taken at that 2 hours mark)....checked this morning and there is more oil.

it goes back thursday but as far as what your dealing with...I'm pretty sure it's the rear main seal but after finding what i did yesterday---it might not be a bad idea to get under the truck with a good bright flashlight and a rag and see if you find any other issues.

Now the question remains with that crack...is how the hell do they fix it---because it's above the oil pan---grrrrrr :(

I had the same leak with my 09 Silverado CC 4X4, 5.3. It started about 25,000 miles. I thought maybe I didn't get the filter tight. After the 30k change, I noticed I had the same problem. Took it to the dealership and they replaced the pan gasket and put dye in the oil to look for other leaks. I suspect it was the rear seal based on the location of the leak. Within a few days I noticed the same issue. I corrected it by letting someone else deal with it. Less than 2 weeks after taking it in for service, I traded it. Hope the new truck doesn't develop the same issue since it is identical. I don't think my lovely wife (of 28 years) would let me pull that one again.

I'm willing to let them fix it but that crack is what is bothering me. It's above the oil pan...unfortunately that doesn't leave alot of options (at least to my knowledge)....i wouldn't be happy if they tried welding that crack, but seeing it's above the pan i don't know if that can be removed or replaced or if it's part of the engine block. If it's part of the block...then they are gonna have their hands full. It goes back in thursday...but i was there bright and early this morning and the same tech and service manager that looked at it yesterday both agreed it wasn't the oil filter (they apparently wanted to rule it out because i didn't use an ac delco filter)....they could see the oil all over the place.

I do have a bit of faith in these guys and it's the type of dealership that steam cleaned the entire interior of the truck free of charge because a tech got a little bit of dirt on the drivers seat...they tend to go above and beyond which is why i don't think it will take too much for them to repair it correctly.

The soon to be wife loves the truck and knows if i can't fix it...someone will...but this is warranty work and something i'm not going to touch if it's under warranty...

Took mine to the dealer the next town over instead of the one here in town. Now I trust those guys! They installed my remote start kit and had the rear main repaired in 4-5 hours.
