Jammed spare winch?

Was at the fishing lake today, and my buddy had a flat, but no spare. So I went to get mine down for him, and it jammed about halfway down. Fortunately, it was far enough that I could push it all the way back up and release the wheel. But now, I have a spare winch that won't go down, or up. I'm sure someone has had this issue...

 

Thinking about retrofitting a winch from a 90's truck, I never had an issue with the one on my 1990.

This is a common issue with our trucks, 800's, Some cant even get there's down and have to cut the assembly off in order to do so. Lucky for me, I test it every month and shoot grease inside to prevent it. It has worked so far. .

had to saw the tire winch off on my 2003 suburb and same with my 03 silv. pain in the ass. like carder said, now i spray wd40 or grease or whatever i have lying around in there every once in a while now

Had the same trouble with mine, so now my spare just stays in the bed of the truck haha

It feels almost like a rock was jamming it. The first time I used the one on my 1990, there was 20-30 pounds of mud packed in and on top of the spare and all around the winch, of course it worked flawlessly. Everyone has told me not to grease them, and to oil it minimally, too much and all the dust will make it jam even worse.

 

Since the '90 isn't running and it's now my brother's, I might retrofit its winch into the 2006. Worth a try I think.
