Gasser with 400+ lb/ft

So, in a few years I will be upgrading to a 2500. Im looking for something that will tow around 10K easily, but I wont be doing it often enough to justify the purchase price, maintenance cost, or increased fuel cost of a diesel. Im only towing a few times a year, but when I pull that much, It will be up a very steep grade.

I made this trip this past weekend with my FIL's F250 V10, and it did really well. As much as I hate to say it, I liked it way better than my old 6.0. So it got me to wonder how the GM 2500s compared. I noticed that Ford does not make the V10 anymore, but the 6.2 kicks out a tick over 400lb/ft, and the Ram 5.7 Hemi is right at 400 lb/ft. Ive been a chevy guy since high school and I think it would really hurt to have to go to another brand. So, does anyone know if GM has any plans on upping the torque numbers on their 6.0 in the future?

Its not that big of a deal since i only rarely load up with that much weight, and its only a 10 mile trip at most, but the hills are killer on that short stretch. Maybe Im just being silly but I was just currious.

Also, I know since its at eleast 3 years away, it sprobably impossible to tell right now, but maybe someone has an inside scoop.

what year 6.0 did you drive? i have driven a 03 2500 with a 6.0 and an 08 2500 and an 11 2500 with a 6.0 and they were way different then the GMT800 6.0. especially the 6 speed

Mine was an 06 2500 (non HD), which had the 4spd and 3.73 gears, so it wasnt the best outift for towing, but it did get 15 mpg unloaded. My dad had the same truck in the HD model (4.10s) and it was just a smidge better, but only got 13mpg. The V10 has 3.73 gears and gets 15 unloaded.

I test drove a 2011 HD with 3.73 gears, and it seemed a little sluggish to me. I know the new ones have about 385 lb/ft, but thats a long way from the 450+ that the V10 is kicking out. Maybe Im just having trouble coming to terms with the fact that a Ford gasser has a leg up on GM. I even concidered trying to find a decent used one for myself, but like I said before, I think it would hurt my pride too much.

im not saying that your lying, but i have never ever heard of 15MPG out of the ford V10.

on thing i can tell you is that i used to use a 05 or 06 ram 2500 with a hemi and it was awful towing a loaded dump trailer.. honestly towed the same as my 5.3.

i have towed an 8000k lb trailer with an 11 2500 6.0, and it towed really nicely, not like a diesel, but very good. maybe you should try and find one you can borrow and see if you like it. would you ever consider an 8.1?

Well, the V10 is my father-in-law's truck, and those are the numbers he gets out of it, which probably arent the numbers Ide get out of it.

Dont think Ide concider an 8.1 just because the truck would be too old for me to finance.

I was looking at all the gas options for the Big 3, and all of them have their HP and Tq ratings above 4K rpm. I know my old 96 Vortec 5.7 only made 325 lb/ft, but it made it at around 2500 IIRC, and the V10 made its tq at around the same rpm. Why are the tq numbers being pushed so far into the rpm band? Dont the manufacturers know that tq should be developed in the low end to get heavy loads moving?

Idiots is my guess. They people buying the trucks that don't know any better. They see "Brand A" makes 350 HP at 5500 RPM and 375 lb-ft of torque at 2700 RPM, and "Brand B" makes 360 HP at 6000 RPM and 400 lb-ft of torque at 4500 RPM. all they see is "Brand B" makes more HP and Torque, and that's all they care about. They don't know what range torque should be in they just now it has more.

Now before I cause a whole bunch of hell on here I do know not everyone thinks like that, but a lot of people do

As far as the bank goes..you can find an 07 2500hd with an 8.1 and be ok becasue its less thwen 6-7 yrs old..

alot of guys knock the 8.1 for its gas mileage...but you dont buy a truck like this to get groceries..and if its doing the job you bought it for "towing 10,000+ lbs" who cares what its getting.. Ive had two lly duramax,s and never got better then 12-13 towing or not.

bone stock the 8.1 makes like 460 ft/lbs.. I recently did a Raylar cam and picked up around 70 HP, with custom tuning..

.the 8.1 has so much potenial..its just that gm had to follow guide lines and really resrtict it.

with raylar,s cam, alum heads, and a set of long tube headers,.. makes around 525 HP...

were it should be, 1 HP per cubic inch

i dont know, i think that the 6.0 is a really good engine and its bulletproof.

you might want to rethink the diesel, i dont know if you have ever driven one or not but you will be able to pull 10k easily and get decent MPG's

I don't think people should be scared of reving these new motors, they like to scream and seem happy doing it. Honestly, if you drove a new 2500 6.0 and found it sluggish you should probably drive one again, because there not. might have just been your mood that day and I have some experience with the ford V10. Please don't disregard a very good engine whose only fault is being slightly overshadowed by the big diesels.

Well, The only experience I had with the new 6.0/6 spd combo is on a 10 minute test drive with no load, so Im not really knocking it. I really just have to try one when towing. I have also heard that the 6.0 really comes to life when tuned. Anyone have any experience with a newer tuned 6.0?

if you were going to keep what you have for a while, take the LQ4 out, poke/stroke to a 408. with the right cam, head work, tune should get you 500+ easy..swap to 4.10s and enjoy..

Oh, I dont have the 2500 any more. I currently have a 1500 with the 5.3 now. I had the 2500 about 3 years ago.

you can still do the swap... :D

I could, but that would only increase the fun-ometer, not the safe payload of my current truck.

When the 5.3 goes, Im gonna swap in either a hopped up 5.3 crate motor, or a mildly built 6.0. Havent really looked into it too much, but its in the back of my mind.
