S o i have a 2002 Gmc Sierra 1500 with a 4.8l and it seems to be ticking. i was told by a technician i work with it sounds like a bad lifter. my question is is it? i know you cant diagnose over the internet but its ticking when the engine warms up and under idle or low rpms when i rev up the rpms it goes away for a few seconds than starts ticking again. What could it be and what do u guys recommend i do about it? thanks for the help

My dads 2004 sierra 5.3 started doing that in april and was told it was a lifter by a shop in town. He just left it alone wanting a new truck anyway and it went away about two weeks ago and hasn't done it since. Anyway what u described is exactly what his was doing

How many miles on the truck? Could be sludged up? Next time you go to do an oil change dump a quart of cleaner in before you drain oil and run a while. We used to use a quart of kerosine. Then let it idle for 3 or 4 hours. Change oil right away afterwards.

ticking is normal on the vortec engine's my dads truck (180k miles) does it on start up and goes away after it idles for a while and you drive it, my truck (210K miles) only does it on really cold days and it goes away...my advice just keep on driving it and dont worry

I would start by looking for exhaust leaks.Just because it ticks doesnt always have to be a lifter i heard the same noise turn out to be a bad injector.

could try the screwdriver/stethoscope test. I think harbor freight sells mechanic stethoscope cheap. Just stick it on vavle covers(and other end of screwdriver to your ear) where lifters are closest and keep moving around. if one spot is much loud3er/more defined than the other, you know something is off
