I have had nothing but VAIO's for my personal use and I love them. I'm on my 4th one as I tend to upgrade every few years due to abuse (I DJ on the side and they've had every manner of beverage spilled on them, dropped, things dropped on them, dust, smoke, etc.) but they are smooth running machines. My current one is an ultra-light and it's my baby. integrated blu-ray, hd screen, good battery life.

The laptop will be a general use machine , not just for one thing. My 2 kids, wife and I all use the laptop. Guess we spend most of our time surfing the web. Going out today to best buy to actual look and feel these new laptops and the seem to have a good selection to choose from. Defiantly won't be looking at the HP or apple laptops. My IBM laptop has a 15" monitor so atleast that or a 17" would be nice to.

I had a 17" for my first laptop the the was way to big. Really happy with the 14" samsung but portability was a key for me. If you have a desk you use it at you could always hook it to a 24" monitor.

I went from a 15" standard to a 17" wide. When I bought the 17" the computer just sat on a desk. In class its a pain. Its big and doesn't leave much room for a notebook. Is like to go to the Samsung series 7 15.6"

You sure you want a laptop? If it is a family computer, a desktop would seem like the best choice for you and your family; Reason being that like your old laptop, you can keep desktops for a long time and can swap out parts to keep it running in tip top shape over the years, my friend keeps his comps for about 8 years before buying a completely new shell and building it from ground up. But, I love my comp being it is also a 17in monitor and I don't mind how big it is being that it is my main comp and performs quickly, but definitely look around and check your options, I bought my comp from newegg.com and got a heck of a deal so you might look around there too since you can read reviews right on the spot.

For him I wouldn't recommend the pro if he is just upgrading after so many years that is way to much power, it's not like a truck where you can do burnouts or anything for fun you'd be the guy driving the 6.2 L engine in gridlock traffic for life.

Check out the 13" or 15" Macbook Pros with Retina Display.... The Body and Display are stupendous

I saw you said no Apple for you so I won't recommend one. But I have seen the Lenovo(made by IBM) laptops work really well and I've heard some good stuff about Samsung too. HP, Dell, Acer, and those cheaper brands you should probably stay away from.

Well, made my purchase today at Best Buy. Open box sale Samsung 17.3" intel core i7 2630QM processor at 2Ghz 8GB memeory, 1.5TB hard drive, Nvidia graphics and Blue ray player with windows 7.

Couldn't pass it up it was way to good of a deal.

Thanks to all for your input and suggestions, it did help.
