Weight rated "C" tires on a 2500 HD

I currently have 285/70/17 on 9" wide aftermarket rims on my 05 2500HD. I am currently running Firestone Destination M/T's that rub slightly and also I am sick of the M/T ride. I guess I am getting too old!

I have an opportunity to get a very nice used set of Cooper ATR- LT 275/70/17's cheap, but they are only "C" rated. I have no problem running the "D" rated tires currently instead of the OEM "E" rated, just not sure what to expect dropping all the way down to "C" rated. I really never haul much or trailer anything huge, so I think it would be OK, but would like to hear other experiences before I would waste my money! TIA!

If you drive within the limits of the tire,it shouldn't be a problem. Just don't loan it to anyone to haul gravel. The truck doesn't know what the tires are rated for.

Personally, I wouldnt do it. But, like said above, it should be OK as long as you dont exceed the limits of the tire. Just take into account that the weight of your truck factors into that limit.

Yeah, I understand the part of staying under the max capacity. I'm not really worried about that because at least I can control that. I guess I am hoping to hear from someone who has tried it and whether they affected the ride quality or handling due to the lack of sidewall and tread thickness,

I've heard from a few locals who have used them and were fine. 1 guy even used them on a dually. I'm just not sold on the safety of them for myself and my family so wanted to get more experiences on here.

FWIW, It's a great deal on the tires so I WANT them to work, but the more I investigate it the less I think it's a good idea.

Thanks for the input so far, and more is welcome!

I would think they would be fine since you don't haul or tow much weight. A "C" rated tire will have a lower MAX air pressure on the sidewall than a "D" or "E" so you will need to stay within the tires limits and DO NOT over inflate. I would think you would notice a much nicer ride too. The Cooper ATR is a nice tire and will be much quieter than your M/T's.

The ride may be quite a bit softer, and even squishy when cornering.

I bought a pair of tires for a truck I drove in college (96 2500), but the tire shop didnt tell me they were C rated. I assumed they wouldnt put a tire that light on a 2500, but they did. The ride was so wishy-washy that I went back the next monday (bought them the friday before) and had them replace the tires with E rated tires. They tried to sell me on the C rated tires (obviously they didnt want to eat the cost of the tires) telling me that they would carry more weight than the truck was rated for, but for me the difference in ride and feel was unacceptable. Im not sure if they would have been OK or not, but I didnt feel safe on them.

Again, if it were me, Ide just hold off for some D rated tires.

Weight is one thing, another is the extra "toughness" that a E rated tire gives you on rough, gravel, rocky roads. Those extra plys in both the tread and sidewalls can save your bacon.

C rated tire, 24,000 miles, gravel road, middle of know-where Wyoming.

Spare had 5 lbs of air in it.

Lesson learned, the hard way.

I had C rated duratracs on my 05 1500HD...... which weighs more all the time than most of you on here will ever have in your truck at any given time. They lasted around 30000 miles and were wore out like any E rated version of the same tire ever did. And really they weren't that bad but one of them exploded in a spectacular fashion on the highway. Before you start screaming it's because it wasn't the correct load range.... wrong. I had an E rated Duratrac blow up the exact same way on another truck I had.

Just stay within the pressure and load limits of the tire and you will be fine.

    • Which one, the AT or AS?   Starfire is made by Cooper/Goodyear but at $85/tire I'd think I'd need to level-set my expectations that they may not even be round 😉 But you're saying they're decent?   I'm already into this thing $1506 in parts, fluids, etc. Totaled all my receipts today. $250 of that was replacing an EGR and MAP sensor that were probably fine, but I'm not going to return the parts since they've been installed. I'm cheap, but not that cheap. I use it, I keep it!   I may or may not make money if I sell the truck at this point, but, that wasn't really the point. And if I billed my time, I'd be hosed for real. My thought on the tires is I "might" put 1,000 miles on before selling it. I just don't want to put absolute junk on it, that doesn't do anyone any good. If the Solus solidly isn't junk, I'll definitely consider them.
    • I leave mine as is. I'm always a trip away from riding on unpaved roads. Dealer can clean it when they prep it after I trade it in for another new truck.
    • I have these on two vehicles and love them. Pepper is one of them 😉
    • 4WD. Far as I know it came stock with P's and not LT's. Definitely planning to put P's on it, but stock is a 109 XL load rating so I should probably stick within that guideline.   No rebates on anything I can see at the moment. Discount Tire is offering $50 off, but Pep Boys is very competitive on price, and also carries all the off-brand stuff. Les Schwab always wants an arm/leg, but they do good work.   It still has the original spare. Goodyear Wrangler RT/S, thing looks like a tractor tire LOL!! How times have changed.
    • 2020 Sierra 2500 HD (base model) gas engine 4wd.    All 4 windows roll down on their own. Happens somewhat randomly after stop and engine off - when engine turned off, when walking away from vehicle before or after locks activated. Pulled the window fuse F14 Instrument Panel Fuse Block Right; the driver's side still activates from driver's side door panel; passenger and back seat windows activate from local switches on their doors but not from driver's side group of switches. Power mirrors don't activate with fuse removed either (same fuse for both circuits). Problem not solved.    How can they even activate with fuse removed but they are all still opening and can control from each door?  When they open on their own, I can shut them from the switch in each door, but they don't stay closed.    Seems to be activated somehow with key fob; something bumping the key fob in my pocket or just handling - removed key fob and took it far enough away and now the windows stay closed. Replaced key fob batty just in case, no change.    Sounds like some kind of wiring short or maybe electronics. Dealer will first replace electronic control module without checking anything else and I anticipate problem will still exist since their troubleshooting skills are limited to "do whatever the computer says".  In any case, keyfob seems to be activating the circuitry.    Surely I'm not the only one with this issue, but I can't find anything related on the site. What do yall think?   JohnRoy
