8.1 Re-build... Need Some Input

Im picking up an 04 silverado cc lb allison 4x4 2500hd etc.. Its got 230,000 on it you hit the key it fires right up and runs almost as good as mine other 8.1 sierra. My plan is to take the 8.1 out of my sierra with the raylar cam, ported/polish intake, many new parts, ETC.

That 8.1 was going to go in the new silverado then take that 230,000 mile motor and tear it

down, bring it to the engine builder ive used before to look over the block take it 30 over

inspect the crank clean/polish it, now for the internals im looking for some input on... I

love the raylar cam, When you start getting into there pistons,heads,etc.. Its big money,

So id like to see what else is out there i know dart makes blocks of different stlyes and sizes. Ive seen other marine companys online that claim to have qaulity parts for the 8.1..

Im not looking to get real crazy I just want a good solid motor that makes good power without and loss of driveabilty or dependibility! Its not hard with these 8.1,s to make 500+ Horse power.. Comp makes parts and cams but the problem with them is they make like 1/2 the power the raylar cam does, and it makes it at 38-4600 rpm,s which doesnthelp when your towing or

hauling. The raylar cam i have makes power pretty much instantly.. There complete head package is almost $3500 with new head bolts and rockers..So again if anyone has any input or knows of any other good 8.1 stuff please let me know..

I don't know any 8.1 specific info, but I would find a low mile junkyard motor and build it however you want. That way you only have to do 1 engine swap  If you could find a motor with a tranny that would be even better, you could go ahead and beef it up too. I've heard the name Suncoast, I think they make some really strong tranny parts. Might be worth checking out.

Buy a dmax slap a spicy tune in it/lift pump. Presto. 500hp and well over 800ft lbs. :)

I've looked around at 8.1 stuff before, it's a huge headache because the aftermarket support isn't really there. It's lots of one off custom stuff you have to do to make power with those engines. Heads, cam, big headers, FI or funny gas. Personally I would look into a whipple charger and some good EFI Live tuning if I wanted power out if a BB Chevy.

I think that would be a little pricey LOL

I wouldn't worry about the tranny until your putting down over 500hp. Even then a shift kit would probly hold it out. Suncoast tranny and t/c cost you big $$$$$$....

$3500 dollar heads aren't? That not including cam, stall to suite the cam, long tubes, and tuning. I bet the twin screw whipple still put more powa to the ground than said mods...for almost same price.

I stated what I would do, the cheapest option to go fast in a truck in that in that position is look for a used dmax! Tuning alone will net more RWHP and torque than putting aaallll kinds of money into a gasser. IJS...

Run the 230k 8.1 till it pops then rebuild it. These Vortecs just keep running look at the fellow here with 300k on the 4.8. I cant find your original thread about the truck but it sounded like there was plenty of life left in the engine.

I was at the scrap yard this morning looking to grab some springs from a truck and was talking to the guy 'kid' in charge of the vehicles there.. So we got to talking and I was telling him about the two 8.1,s im gonna have and what the plans were.. And he told me about his truck.. and said cmon ill show you.. So to my surprise it was one of the nicest custom trucks ive seen in a long time..1980-87 body stlye crew cab long bed.. Lifted like 6"with cooper stt tires 37,s All black with the seats and console from a 99-06 truck, And under the hood was a beautiful LBZ.. I was almost drooling! It was put together so nice.. Everything looked and worked as it should, They really took there time and did a great job! He said it was a lot easier then most people think, And got the lbz for $2500 with 120,000 on it! Ill have to get some pics posted.. Im half temped to find and lbz and slap it in this 04 silvy.. And just keep the high mile 8.1 as a spare to build whenever..

I am really leaning towards an lbs 'chevyboy' It shouldnt be that hard putting it in a truck that comes with them.. The allison is already there! That would be sweet, Then i wouldnt have to buy another truck when it comes time for the big camper/toy hauler..

Whats the best thing to do to that lbz to make real power?

Simple. Lift pump, CAI, str8 pipe and dsp5 switch. I can hook you up with some very reputable tuners and good prices!! Doesn't take much to get 450-500...you could do in a tune alone but I wouldn't recommend it without a lift pump and some sort of exhaust. Most guys with stock tranny shoot for 450-480...after that your tranny is playin with fire.

edit: just realized you have a 5 speed, i wouldnt go past 450 without a shift kit in a 5 speed.
