Anyone running 17" stock black steelies (spares) on their truck?

I have a 2010 Reg Cag short box 5.3 4x4 and hate the chrome covered steel wheels that came on the truck. I am thinking of running the 16 hole black steel wheels with some bigger AT tires. I am curious if anyone has photos of this set up. My truck is Victory red. I really don't like chrome, and the black steelies seem like a cheap option just not sure how they would look. I know GM also puts a black 17 inch Aluminum wheels on certain trucks as spares BUT, I think they are only 7 inches wide as opposed to the 7.5 wide 16 hole steel wheels.

Let see some pics. I know some probably use them for winter tires. I am thinking of using them year round and selling my chrome covered ones.

Thanks

Jeff

Have you thought about the plasti dip option? You'd have the black look for about twenty bucks and if you like it spend some more on a permanent solution...

That may be an idea.... my thought is if I got 4 standard black steel wheels and bought AT tires I could sell my current wheels and tires to help pay for the new tires. I know the black steel wheels can be had around here for about $50-60. My current tires have 22,000 on them so they are about half gone I would assume. I am just wondering how the steel wheels would look. Someone out there has to be running a similar set up..

Thanks!

There is a guy running black steel wheels (non-oem) with the OEM chrome caps on an 05 red Silverado. His name is Z71AST or something similar

Why not just remove the plastic chrome cover from your existing wheels?

Can it be removed? I wasn't aware that it could be. I found a photo while searching the site. I may be the minority, but I actually like how the spares look.

here is the thread. Photo is in the 5th post down.

Plastic cover is glued on a black wheel with matching holes in the steel wheel under the covers.

hmmmmm...... interesting. I wonder how easily the glue/covers come off. I would probably have to destroy them to get them off. May just by a set of the 16 hole steel wheels for $50.00 a piece and sell my current wheels and tires as a set. Dont really like the Wrangler ST's that are on the truck now. Makes a 4x4 truck like like a 2 wheel drive truck. With 22,000 miles on the current tires, I could probably get $150.00 a piece for the tire wheel combos giving me $400.00 to put towards new AT tires!

I know on cars they have plastic lugs that screw into the real lugs, the plastic comes right off I'm sure it's a similar idea with trucks

Not on the trucks (sadly). The covers are actually one piece with the wheel.

my 2012 has simulators as it is not a chromed wheel, but a cover. I have not tried to remove it though, but when you remove the center cap you can clearly see it is a seperate piece glued or not i dunno..

The 17 inch fake chrome wheel with the round holes have the entire chrome plastic piece glued to a black steel wheel. It also uses a chrome cap that is held on by plastic lug nut covers that thread onto the outside of the metal wheel lug nuts. I doubt anyone would be able to get the chrome cover off of all 4 wheels without breaking at least one. And I think if you try to buy a replacement chrome wheel cover it would only be available already bonded to the black wheel. Really don't know why they did not just make the wheel like they did with the base wheels on the G6. No need to glue it on, the cap and nuts will hold it just fine.

Agreed!! I am just going to look for a set of 17" 16 hole Steelies to put on the truck. I will sell the chrome clad wheels and Wrangler ST tires. I drive by Schrams http://www.schramauto.com/ almost daily. Anywhere from $49.00 to 69.00 on their site for the wheels

    • I Wouldn't Know Where to Begin    Oh I know where I would begin but I'm just one of over eight billion people on this rock. Eight billion versions of where the goal post is. How large it should be. How far to kick from. What ball is the right ball. Elevation. Age.....are you getting the point? It isn't about disagreeing with one individual. It's about agreeing only with one individual. One's self.   Agreement comes when multiple people hold the same point already. THAT is the goal of an education. Building the Social Contract. That thing that allows us to all read this sentence. We've agreed on the alphabet and how to arrange those letters into words we agree upon whose meanings hold true for everyone entering into that contract. Those words arranged into a sentence form an idea and several sentences strung together in a paragraph convey an argument for or against or inform the reader of a state, condition or perhaps reveal a things nature. Paint a word picture. Make oneself known.    This contract is not limited to words although they are often explained by words. Things like numbers and their usefulness. Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Music, Art and so on.    The frequency of middle C (C4) is 261.63 Hz. We build on that to make music we all can enjoy even if we all can not compose or play. You don't have to master it to make it enjoyable and useful.    So why is the Beginning so difficult? Why is agreement so elusive?   Everyone "Signs" the contract (when receiving that education in obtaining it)  but fewer and fewer in this world have any intention of living by that contract. They find exploiting that contract more advantageous. Disruption. With intent. Without intent. In Ignorance. In your face. With a double dog dare you. With a hold my beer. In resistance to that contract and in spite how it looks on us. It permeates the very air we breath.    In this way the contract is subject o advantage. Abide by it when it serves you, disregard it when it doesn't. Unpredictable and self-serving. Corrosive.....Toxic........   It says a lot about a persons character to disregard the contract, the truth, first principles. None of it good.        ********************************************************   https://medicine.yale.edu/news-article/character-vs-personality-who-we-are-and-who-we-aspire-to-be/   Just an interesting article.
    • It costs $5,250 for the Yukon Nightfall option (black wheels, emblems and illuminated black GMC grill badge). What a "deal".
    • I keep getting the above error message on my 25 Sierra.  If I reset the infotainment unit (via the phone hang up button) it will work again for a day or 2.   But I dont want to do have to reset  all the time. Works fine in my 2023 Corvette. On both vehicles I connect wirelessly.   I have a Google Pixel 10 Pro XL, phone is up to date.  Any Ideas.  See attached
    • LOL, its thrown a few people because this item is being talked about in the gas part of the HD forum. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to put a very brief wording in your profile with the year/GM or Chev/2500 or 3500/ and yes the 6.6 Duramax. When I joined this forum I could see the confusion ensuing for my own truck unless I had it listed with my chosen name handle unless one has a few vehicles that apply to a GM forum as that becomes confusing as well. Anyway its all good, makes for a little forum excitement 😉
    • Gasgacinch, James Gaskets. Good stuff. High tac to help hold the gasket in place while assembling parts. Fills minor surface imperfections. Slightly elastic. Gasoline / coolant / oil proof. Very handy stuff. Nothing like RTV.
