switching to 10w-30 decrease oil consumptoin and cold start tick?

I've been reading around on bobistheoilguy.com and came across something that got me thinking about the oil consumption and cold start tick that I get when it is cold.

 

 

Would switching to 10w-30 help with oil consumption and possibly prevent the cold start tick that I sometimes get when it's cold in the mornings?

 

 

I ran M1 5w-30 since new but noticed it was starting to consume more oil so I switched to Castrol Edge 5w-30 at my last oil change. The consumption has slowed but it's still there. I'm wondering if switching to M1 10w-30 (or Castrol) might stop the oil consumption. Thoughts?

I know my truck is older but I have tried that and it didnt help. I just hit 200k and it has consumed oil since about 100000. The only thing that I have found that helped it was the Lucas oil stabilizer. It definitely helps with cold starts and it slowed down the consumption. It is pricey but it helps IMO.

10W30 won't flow as well when cold, so "ticking" may well be worse. The ticking is due to oil not flowing through the whole system yet.

I have read that it helps and then it doesn't do a thing. You can try it and see if it makes a difference. What oil filter are you using? That makes a difference on some vehicles as well.

+1 on that, if you live in a cold climate 0W/30 would flow quicker, however if your vehicle is under warranty it is better to use the prescribed oil in the owners manual.

 

Thicker grade oil (i.e. 10W/40, 20W/50) is used when there is excessive oil consumption, that is the oil is getting pass the rings and burning.

 

The first number indicates the oils viscosity when cold (think of the W as meaning winter), the second number indicates the oils viscosity when the engine is at full operating temperature.

I'll answer all questions here at once.

 

Mileage is alittle over 63K

 

I'm currently running a Wix filter. I ran a M1 filter before the Wix since I got it on sale at Advance with the oil and that seemed to increase consumption. I was previously running AC Delco/M1 since new and didn't notice much consumption but I didn't really pay as much attention to it then.

Forget if I read it on bobistheoilguy or some other site, but the cold flow viscosity for M1 5W30 and 10W30 is almost similar; therefore I don't think that change would do anything for you.

I've always'd wondered what a commercial product like BG 109 Compression Performance Restoration that supposedly cleans piston rings would help solve the oil consuption issue.

i'm in Nashville, TN so we are not that cold in the winter. We get down to the low teens but that's about it.

 

I'm wondering if running a 0w-30 in either Castrol or Mobil will help since it has a lower viscosity at start-up and will get to the internals quicker. Since it's a 30 weight at operating temps I don't see how it can hurt.

 

The Mobil 0w-30 is even Dexos approved. If I'm reading it right, the 0w-30 has a pour point that is almost 10* colder than 5w-30. I don't get the tick in the summer, only in the winter so maybe using the 0w-30 in the winter is a better bet. I wonder if it would do anything for oil consumption?

 

Is a lower or higher temp for Pour point better and is a higher or lower number better for viscosity?
