Bad CV Joint? GMT 900

My 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 has just under 90,000 miles. I have a leveling kit and 285/75R17 FS Destination M/Ts. Recently I started hearing binding, grinding noises and some clunking coming from the passenger front. Today I pulled the tire off and checked everything out... Found CV boot ripped and most or all of the grease slung out of it. when spinning the wheel it will freewheel a bit, then tighten up like its spring loaded and then release...like its binding up in one area.

So my questions:

Are the $75 to $100 axle shafts on ebay ok to put in or junk?

Does anyone know the GM or Delco part #?

Any recommendations on a certain brand or location (website) to purchase from?

How hard is this job and can you estimate the time? Any idea what a dealer or repair shop would charge? I have most tools except 35mm socket, (have air tools, jack, jack stands, etc) am fairly comfortable with the work, just have not done this particular task before.

I appreciate any and all comments, advice, etc..

Thanks, Mike

It's not too bad. Plenty of youtube videos showing "how to"

I've been very pleased with NAPA "new" cv shafts not the remanufactured

Can't comment on what brand is best but the socket can be rented from retail chains like oreillys and auto zone. Last time I pulled a cv it took all of 5-10 minutes. Just youtube it its pretty simple

I have an 07 NBS Silverado, same problem you have, and mine's leveled as well. My axles took me about 3-4 hrs a piece, and I did one, the other one went less than 2 weeks later so I'd do both if I was you, and also now my front axle seals in the diff are bad, I'm not sure if it has to do with the level or what but I figured I'll give you a heads up from my experience...

As far as what's involved, I had to pull the tires, take off the sway bar, pop the upper control arm/ball joint, and then me and my sisters boyfriend had to wrestle with the first axle, the second one was easier since we knew what to expect.

I called the dealer (I get wholesale pricing) and the axles were 3X what I paid at NAPA and the NAPA Gold axles are working just fine.

I just had to replace my passenger side UCA as the upper ball joint was loose, about $300 with labour. My truck has 70,000 Kms and we have terrible pot holes in our "roads".

I noticed it was clunking on the passenger side. Add in a wheel allignment and good to go.

Just had mine done two weeks before I traded. It was a GMT900 07 sierra with 105,000. The dealership warrantied the hub because the wheel bearing was bad. I paid to replace the CV joint parts only while they were at it. The boot was torn on mine too. No complaints for sure.
