Driveline clunk

Ok, so I have combed through the forum looking for an answer and really have not been able to find one. I have the GM clunk on my 2010 sierra 4x4. I am gong to service all the fluids this weekend and want to attempt fix this. I have read that some say to use a marine type grease, but have heard that there is a risk of it working its way into the transfer case. Others have said to use ATF. So I would like some guidance from you guys on which way to turn. Thank you in advance.

If I remember right, there was an entire multi-page thread on this here a few years back. I remember after reading it I went and greased the splines of the driveshaft yoke. Never got rid of the clunk. I've got Amsoil front to rear in this thing too with no change. This one I think .... http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/121476-getting-hit-in-the-rear/?hl=%2Bgrease+%2Bsplines&do=findComment&comment=1083014

I chalk that one up to another case of shoddy workmanship - a sign of the times, and what seems to be a staple of the new century so far. Can't seem to get any decent products no matter how much they cost. From trucks, to lawn equipment, to computers, to home appliances. With the amount they get for these trucks, I expect them to be FLAWLESS. Is that really so much to ask? We put a man on the moon 44 years ago for cripes sake ....

are you sure it's the slip joint, and not rear spring warp? both have the same characteristics...just a thought..

I do not think it will be of much comfort, but I've heard drive line clunks on almost every truck I've driven, regardless of brand. I think it is just the nature of the beast, trucks have noisy drivetrains?

That is an interesting video. I never realized there was that much movement through the springs.

That's not what I'm hearing. I hear it the loudest on light throttle upshift. As soon as it hits second gear I get a sound like someone tapped the driveshaft with a ball peen. Been that way since about 5k miles, and now at 57k miles it's a bit louder than it used to be. The grease stopped the "bump" I used to get every single time I stopped at a light. Always though someone drove into me. This sound here is either internal to the tranny, or a sloppy differential or u-joint. My rear springs do creak worse than any vehicle I've owned before though ... and they were all far north of 200k miles.

When I was 16, I used to rat-race my buddy down all the backroads in town at STUPID speeds. He had a '83 Toyota pickup with 8" combined body & suspension lift with 2 Ranchos per wheel. Every time he let the clutch out, his differential would twist like hell, especially from a dead stop. Always though he'd break something, but never did. Truck rotted away to nothingness in a few years before any hard parts broke. That video brought all those memories back. Many many moons before the GoPro ...

I figured - I didn't hear anything except an engine that sounded to be missing a couple cylinders. :D

So is there a fix for this or just the nature of the beast?

Have you done the spline lube yet?

I had the driveline clunk at 70,000 miles took it in to my chevy dealer they fixed it smooth as silk now. I walked in told them the sound they knew exactly what it was.
