Mobile 1 Oil claiming some extreme numbers...

I believe that, to a certain point…

Different syn oils have different add packages, I have read that some folks believe that m1 has gone down in quality, that's not the case, they are still top dogs when it comes to synthetic oil it's just that the rest of the oil manufactures have caught up to m1 and can be easily bought at stores like walmart (as can m1).

I agree man. I use M1 in all my vehicles. I used a Bosch filter on the truck with the M1 HM this time. I change my oil out every 5000 miles no matter what.. Im gonna due my rear fluids this week after I install a B&D Trans cooler. I will use Royal Purple in the rear. I use it in my Motorcycles, best oil for temp reduction in MC'S , so I will see how it treats the rear.

Just curious, but isn't Royal Purple just regular synthetic oil with a dye added to make it look purple?

Thats a good one :driving:

Is royal purple really worth the cost anyways? I wouldn't use it as motor oil, it would get too pricey, but for like my trans. fluid and differential fluids I would use it if it really does keep temps. cooler than other fluids, especially since I'm planning on installing some really low gears

Like I said I run it in my air cooled Harley and it dropped my temps by 15 degrees. I did install it in a Frontier I previously owned and didnt see any difference. I went back to Mobil 1 Syn. I run Amsoil in my truck Trans.

I realize this info doesn't include the Mobil 1 EP oil, but there's a lot of truth in that there are many quality syns out there with comparable #'s to Mobil 1.

Back in March, the Petroleum Institute of America did analysis of top synthetic oils. There are lots of high quality choices out there. Here is their info:

I think that many get hung up that M1 or Castrol Edge are the kings of the heap because of the dexos certification. It has been mentioned, correctly, that there are many top tier synthetics that meet or exceed anything that GM is specifying. Even the owners manual, in mentioning dexos, say that an "equivalent" oil is allowed. There is hardly a name brand synthetic that does not meet or beat the equivalency standard.

When one starts digging into the dexos certification thing, it is really an eye opener. One could almost glean from all the stuff that it is nothing more than a classic, good old fashioned, shake down. Definately raises questions at the very least. The specification is ok. It is the certification process that leaves doubts.

Royal purple isnt what it used to be, while the regular RP is Dexos now, to meet the API standards for oil for current car warranties they can't use their additive package, to get that you have to buy Royal Purple HPS, which obviously doesn't meet the API standards(Were are made for gas mileage/emissions rather than engine protection), certain metals in the additives don't play well with emissions testing.

I used to use Mobil 1 religiously until the marketing lawsuit with Catrol they lost so they joined Castrol and downgraded their basestock a level.

The story was that CAstrol used grade 3 and M1 used grade 4. Mobile sued castrol for marketing their oil as "full synthetic" since grade 3 contains more petrol basestocks. Grade 4 is full synthetic. Castrol one on the account that grade 3 was synthetic "enough" to call it full.

Soon after Mobil 1 switch to grade 3.

My interpretation, (based on common sense, but not facts):

Mobil 1 saw no point in continuing to use the expensive stuff if they could save money on production costs and keep the claims.

The Group III vs Group IV thing will go on, I am sure. But the differences between them, the gap has been growing increasingly narrower over the years. This whole, who is a synthetic and who is not is really a waste of time except for academics. Both are made from hydrocarbon base stocks.... Group III from mineral oil, and Group IV from natural gas. There is not some dweeb in a lab coat picking his nose and concocting something called a full synthetic out of weird chemicals that no one has heard about, while the other folks are making claims that their mineral based stuff is a synthetic when it is not. Both are synthetics. They meet the classification standards to be synthetics. Both are made from natural hydrocarbon sources. Only because the Group IV starts out with a very uniform molecular base stock from natural gas is it able to claim more uniformity and therefore better characteristics than the Group III. But the advances in refinery hydrocracking have made it so that the Group III's come pretty darn close to the Group IV now.

So, Exxon Mobil knows this. Why use the expensive method to make a Group IV when a severly hydrocracked Group III would do the virtually the very same thing. Especially since most of the folks could not tell the difference in real world applications anyway and hardly ever use synthetics to their full potential.

And for those synthetic purists out there..... all of the "real" synthetics have some of that Group III "fake" synthetic in them. It is needed to keep the additive package in suspension. The only outfit that has no problem saying this in their data sheets is Schaeffer with their full synthetic lineup. It is 75% Group IV and 25% Group III. Guess what.... so are the other major "real" synthetics.

    • Because single shot injectors are ancient and multi hole injectors provide smoother running engines and sharper throttle response due to the fuel being atomized better..the best lead I have is a 24lb blue top injector almost everything matches up but the injector will put out about 26lb/hr which is just outside the gm threshold.figured id ask here to see if there was an absolute answer
    • Why is my question?   Any change in injectors requires a tune. Unless you are going back with the OEM part number or a newer part number of that same injector.   Any size difference or type difference like the EV6 style injectors all have different injector data for them. And there is no EV6 injector that matches the factory 25 lb/hr size that your truck comes with. I've been messing with these trucks and tuning them for a long time and what you trying to do doesn't exactly make sense to me.
    • My 6.6 gas lt8 had lifter noise with 28000 miles bought new 2026 and while driven to dealer it threw #1 rod bearing “HD my ass” good luck with yours i hope it don’t turn a rod bearing!
    • When a condition becomes a business model.    https://www.gm-trucks.com/gm-truck-suv-incentives-pricing-2026/   Zane posted this in "Latest Articles".    The honest bottom line   Truck buyers have spent three years assuming this is a temporary condition that will break once inventories normalize. GM just presented it to investors as a durable strategy, on a chart, as evidence of good management.   Inventory did normalize. GM is at 511,000 units and squarely inside its own 50 to 60 day target. The discounts still did not come back, because the low incentive number is the goal rather than a symptom of shortage.   Plan your purchase around that reality instead of waiting for it to change. Follow our ongoing GM News coverage for pricing and incentive changes as the next-generation trucks land.
    • Thought it was raining this morning when we woke. Nope. Dew point was over 80 F and humidity 98%. Zero visibility distance. Everything was 'sweating'. I've seen rain come out of clouds but never out of Pepper or the tree trunks.    Wicked storms just missed us sliding off to the east but by blocks. Heat index about 110 F with air temp in the 90's.    This is  our third wave this month of multiple days of this type of weather. And yet the grass is going dormant and the ground is cracking this side of the street and water up the the hood opposite. Just weird stuff going on.
