4x4...what a difference

I've never heard of using chains in mud, but with the right tires a 4x4 half ton is practically unstoppable.

Ha! I have been stuck in mud many times with lots of tire. If you can get solid ground under 8" of mud you can make it. Any deeper and look out.

Big tires hurt more than they help most of the time. But some 265 mudgrips are perfect. My 2006 is a beast with just all terrains. No level needed because the worst that will happen if the front end drags is a scuff on the slider.

is the 4wd really good in the snow? we had a huge storm last year and i couldn't even take the truck out because it was half way up the door. i got the 4wd for ice fishing. they never plow the lots so you need to get in some nasty places.do you need real aggressive tires?

Wide tires hurt, not big tires just to make it clear. Skinny tires and better for digging deep down to solid ground, dame for snow

You bet it is good in snow. My road will get 24" deep. As long as it is fresh fluffy snow, I can go anywhere in it. If you try to not spin the tires, you can actually get up on the first two inches. Stock tires are fine as long as they are not the road tires they put on the 20" wheels. Halfway up the door, probably not going to happen. One you can push snow with the grille, it is over.

i haven't had the chance yet to drive in some deep snow. this is my first 4x4. not sure what to expect, i'm so used to a 2x4 truck thats difficult in the winter. is there a good tire for the snow that would help with gas mileage? i have off road tires on now, but next go around i'd like something a little less aggressive but something that won't get me stuck and may be better on gas.

I'm sure I'm not going to like paying to repair it if something goes bad but I sure liked driving the snow covered roads with my Auto 4x4 last week after having the 2/4hi/4lo Manual case in the 11....

Remark, take a look at the Michelin LTX AT2. Have them on the 'Burb we take to the mountains, traction was surprisingly good on the ice pack roads. Being Michelin, they're pricey, but with how long they last it's more than worth it.
