Normal trans temp - 4L60E

Now that we are officially in Summer and the temps are in the mid-90's here in Middle TN, I'm curious if my trans temps are normal.

When I'm on the interstate coming home from work I'm in the 160-175* range depending on how fast I'm running. But when I get off the interstate on to city roads with stop and go I'm in the 180* range with 187* the hottest I've seen it so far. Is that normal? I have the factory trans cooler on the truck as well.

I checked my fluid the other day and it was still pink and didn't smell burnt. I couldn't exacly tell where the level was since it's always been difficult to see the exact fluid level on the dip stick due to so much residual fluid at the top of the dipstick.

Is there an aftermarket upgraded cooler for these trucks that is a direct swap?

Your owners Manual states 160 -200 is normal operating temps. The trans and fluid can take much higher temps for brief periods of time with no ill effects. I wouldn't worry in your case based on info provided

Many options available for larger aftermarket coolers. Range from $$-$$$

I think we may have stretched that thread out a bit long with all of our side notes. But all in all good info

The normal operating temperature for the 4L60E is 180F, on hot days it will rise depending on the ambient outside temperature.

Any temperature below <210F is fine (the cooler the better), anything @ >210F+ will start to burn and degrade the transmission fluid.

I live in a very warm climate, and Sara (2001 Z28) runs @ 135F-187F depending on the outside temperature.

Sara has a 3 qt. deep aluminum finned transmission pan (B&M), and a 24K cooler (B&M).
