AFM deactivation kit

This one is for 2007 and 2008 Impalas with the AFM 3.9 liter V6 engine. I wonder why GM does not provide similar kits for the 5.3 liter engines? I got this info from one of Impala forums.

 

3.9L Active Fuel Management Decativation

 

For the 3.9 L engines
(RPO codes LZ8 (vin "R") and LZG (vin "3")) in the 2007 and 2008 Impalas
the AFM lifters are no longer being manufactured so as a result GM has
released a TSB #13-06-01-002 on 6/26/2013 detailing on how to convert
the engine to a non-AFM engine. All it requires is a conversion kit
part# 19299225 that contains the parts necessary to do the conversion
and a special code to get the new ECM calibration that is also required.
The parts in the kit include a new camshaft, lifters, lifter guides,
and a LOMA oil block off plate.

Lot of work and expense for something that a $179.00 plug-in module will take care of.

The kit isn't for disabling AFM, it is for repairing an AFM motor that has problems w/ the AFM lifter system. Disabling AFM is a single bit change in the PCM, assuming the lifter system is working properly.

There is a kit for the 5.3...it's called a BlackBear tune!

And there is another "kit" called the Range Module. Got one. $179 delivered and been installed on my 2013 since it had around 400 miles on it. If need to go to dealer, just unplug it before dealer gets hands on it, then plug back in when picking up from dealer.

With all the warranty concerns regarding aftermarket tunes, it seems the Range product is the way to go because it doesn't overwrite the ECM. That is, if your ONLY CONCERN is disabling the AFM.

I would agree. The Range module is the ideal balance. You basically delete the AFM while it is plugged in. Remove it if going into the dealer, and no one knows what you are doing. Since, as was stated, it doesn't overwrite or recode the ECM. I am game for doing a lot of things, but not ready to do a reprogram of the ECM yet. So the Range module does it for me, for now.

Why are there always "tuners" listed in the "For Sale" sections of the various forums and never any used Range modules? Simply, the Range module works and you'll have to buy a new one if you want one for yourself.

You guys are right, it is an AFM to non-AFM conversion kit. When you deactivate the AFM with a tune, you sitll have the AFM lifters and it is my understanding that some of those were troublesome and contributing to high oil consumption on some trucks.

 

I am glad my truck does not have the AFM. Less of a headache this way.

Well I for one have a tune from Black Bear installed in my truck. I have not needed to reprogram anything since my tune was installed. The tuner as you say has been sitting in my desk drawer since then. I can either sell it since the tune has been installed and working or I can keep it untill I need it. Most people you see selling the Black Bear ones have sold their trucks or decided that they no longer need it sitting and could use the extra money for other things. From what I have read of the Range module you have to plug it in all of the time in order for it to work. Hence not many being resold.
