Helicopter crash

For those of you here in Chicago, I'm sure you heard it on the news.  A medivac helicopter from Good Samaritan Hospital of Downers Grove which is docked in the suburb I live in (West Chicago) crashed last night!

 

So far it seems as though that it was on it's way back to DuPage Airport which is in West Chicago and it didn't quite make it.  It blew up at the intersection of Rt. 38 and Fabyan Parkway at about 9pm last night.  They think an oxygen tank inside exploded or something.

 

It was less than a mile away from the helipad too.

 

Anyway, I went right through that intersection about an hour beforehand.

I wonder about these things happening around me.  I live less than 1/2 mile (by the way the birds fly) to the hospital.  The Heli's fly right over my back yard and house on the way in and out.  Sometimes they are pretty low and fast and even though this is a small town, we have the only hospital within 25+ miles in any direction, and we are 5 miles from the intersection of I-80 and I-79...

It wasn't on a call so it was only the pilot and he's gone now.  According to the Angels that fly it, he was out doing some training.

 

Of course everything is speculative at this point.  West Chicago police and DPA Authority had Fabyan closed off for at least a mile from the accident so no one could get close to glean any info.

That's too bad.  We had 1 actually go down right on hospital property a year or so ago.

We have had a couple of the medical helos go down in the past few years.  I believe one just crashed near the NV-CA stateline last summer.
