Why is the pipe such a weird design? to muffle noise, equalize pressure? Any one got the correct answer?

You are talking about the 6.0 correct. Looking at it definitely looks as a way to reduce noise. Has anyone done a CAI? How much more noise is involved? Any gains in power/mpgs. I've had them in the past on different vehicles but not much was gained. Looks like at least modifying the intake tube would help a lot.

Maybe 1-2 HP with some more noise.

I put a new Volant box on mine with the Donaldson filter. Clean install. Hard to say it I picked up any hiway mileage but it certainly makes the truck sound like it actually had some grunt now when you step on it.

 

No annoying drone at cruise or around the city. At 3000 rpm you get a great rumble when passing someone and it no longer feels like the truck is starved.

If things have changed, stock boxes flow very well. Usually people will just install a tube from the box to the T/B. Costs less and same results.
