Mud Flaps/ Splash Guards

Recommended Posts

So I have a set of Weathertech splash guards on our 2500HD as I was happy with them on our 1500. Thing I didn't take into account is how much higher the new beast sits compared to the 1500, decreasing the effectiveness of the Weathertechs.

What do you guys have? Or any way to possibly "mod" the Weathertechs to be more effective? Or is the Duraflaps the answer with their no drill install? I would prefer a no drill install!

TY!

Chris

Blue2500CC, I replied to your message and attached some pictures of my Duraflaps. You'll notice a big difference in coverage between splash guards and mud flaps, especially the additional flap length when towing trailers.

MORSNO,

Pic in your post isn't showing up, but I received the 2 pics in the pm! TY!!!

I think you may have understated just how BIG of a coverage/ protection difference there is between the Duraflaps and the Weathertechs! Lol Though not as "stylish", the Duraflaps provide more of the needed protection against rock chips!

For those searching for Weathertech reviews, I am happy with the quality of them, just not enough protection on a 2500HD because of the height of the truck! On our '10-1500 4x4 they worked out great!!! Just enough coverage in the rear, and plenty in front when combined with a set of oval step bars! And no rub issues with 275/65/18's on the 1500 either!

TY again!

Do you have any pics on how the dura flaps mount? I only have a 1500 and have the weathertechs just more coverage is sometimes nicer.

MORSNO,

TY for the pic fix for others! Sweet looking TC BTW!!!!

NE,

Good question! Didn't think to ask that! Lol Just know on DF's website they say "No Drill".

They are no drill, they just mount to the fender lip by compression, mine stay nice and level and have never moved. The only pic I have handy just shows a couple of the bolt heads.

I had the same issue with the weathertechs on the rears. I bought some plain rubber ones for $15 and attached them to the weather tech flaps. Worked out fine and gives me considerable coverage in the rear. I didn't worry about the front as I have running boards combined with the weather tech flaps does fine. Sorry about the crappy cell phone pics...

MORSNO,

Do the rears mount similar to the Weathertechs if your familiar with them. The WT's have a tab that clamp against the lip of the fenderwell.

TY for the front pics!!!

Razorbill,

Thats funny!!! I actually have looked at my WT's a few different times wondering if that would work!!!! Lol That gives me the answer! TY!!!

I also have step bars (GM 6" oval), but the WT's need to be maybe 2" lower to block all the "crap". There is just enough of a gap to allow it through. My only concern with the fronts if I try this is the front tires rubbing if I step up a size if/ when Cooper or BFG come out with a 20" tire for me!!! Though this would be cheaper than trying to sell the WT's & buy the Duraflap's! Decisions, decisions!!!

I'm not familiar with the weather techs, but I would think that all the no drill installations are pretty much the same and clamp against the lip. Razorbill's extension idea looks great!

My original pics sucked so I figured I'd throw some better ones up of how I attached the rubber flaps to the WT flaps. Like the OP I purchased the WT flaps but wasn't happy with the coverage but I had already made the investment into the WT's and I liked the way they attached so I went looking for a cheap fix.

The three bolts you see on the inside of the wheel well are not visible from the rear unless you stick your head up in the rear fender. I tried rivet gun but they always wanted to pull through the rubber flaps so I stuck with standard bolts/washers/nuts to secure the whole thing. The other hole in the rubber flap, to the left of the bolts, is just a hole drilled in order to get to the original WT flap tightening bolt.

I use aircraft "leading edge" tape under the rockers to keep the paint chips at bay, lots of gravel roads out here. It's very durable but if you want to remove it it comes off easy with no residue.

I just kept with the WT flaps up front as I have running boards that pretty much protect the cab rocker panels. It would probably be a tight fit to add the rubber flaps to the WT flaps up front. They may rub with compression and a turned wheel, at least with the stock wheels I have that's what it looks like. But for $15 it wouldn't be the end of the world to try it.

MORSNO & Razorbill,

TY very much for the info on the mud flaps!!! Not sure which I will do, the Duraflaps, or the WT mod. Either way, more coverage is always good!

TY again!

Chris
