What's that auto 4WD

When i select that mode its seems to act exactly like when i'm 4X4 mode. I thought that the Auto 4WD engaged the 4X4 mode only when needed and running on 2X4 most of the time.

Best regards and an happy new years to all of you

It should just have the axle engaged in Auto. When the rear tires spin, the transfer case should send power to the front.

That exactly the way i tought it should work but mine is acting (by the sound and the steering wheel feeling) like if it where in 4X4 mode. I tought that the 4WD was working like the AWD does.

from the decrip and op section ,

During normal driving situations, the transfer case can
operate in the Auto 4WD mode. In the Auto 4WD
mode, the transfer case shift control module monitors rear wheel
slip speed, based on the inputs from both the front and rear
propshaft speed sensors. When the vehicle experiences a rear wheel
slip condition, the transfer case shift control module sends a
pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to an electronic
motor, which is the transfer case encoder motor. This motor rotates
the transfer case control actuator lever shaft, applying a clutch
pack. This clutch pack is designed to deliver a variable amount of
torque, normally delivered to the rear wheels, and transfers it to
the front wheels. Torque is ramped up to the front wheels until the
front propshaft speed sensor matches that of the rear propshaft
speed sensor. Torque is ramped down to the front wheels. The
process would repeat if rear wheel slip is detected again.

a pic of the guts for giggles

Never had the auto 4x4 option so I can't say for sure, but in theory, if the truck is in 2wd and you press the auto 4x4 button, you shouldn't hear the transfer case shift because you're essentially not moving anything mechanical. Now going from 2wd to 4wd, you should hear (and somewhat feel) the the transfer case shift. Do you hear/feel anything when you're stopped in 2wd and press the auto button?

It's something I never use because

Unnecessary wear on t case

Isn't very safe when it engages, I know someone that flew off the road when it engaged because a tire grabbed pavement and shot him off the road.

Pressing the AUTO 4WD make me feel exactly the same sensation as if i press the 4X4 button.

Why is it unnecessary wear?

Mine works great on my '14 I actually think it handles best in the snow in auto.
