Gas Tank Problems

Hello, was just wondering if anyone else ever had overflow problems when filling gas tank. I have a '01 6.0l and if I don't add gas manually and very very slowly, it leaks all over. I'm thinking it might be a venting problem, but not sure where to even look for a vent. Thanks in advance!!!!!---Tim

New to forum, so this is my intro.

I'm suprised this topic hasn't had more responses. I'm having the same isses and have been all over with google and seeing several "fixes" that STILL haven't FIXED my problem.

Pump, click...pump, click... pump, click... and so on, till 1/2 hour later the tank is basically full.

I've already removed the entire filler hose assembly and checked it (totally clear, including the screen).

Replaced the evap canister/solenoid P/N 214-2082 or O'Reilley P/N CPV16 (no change). $30 wasted.

Replaced the breather return tube to the inlet neck (no change). $2 wasted

I even went so far as to shove the safety shuttle ALL THE WAY into the tank from the tank neck, that didn't help, either.

Just totally removed the evap assembly from the system; lots of carbon pellets spilled out, indicating the core has been contaminated by gas and is deteriorating. However, the tank STILL won't fill with the entire unit removed, so some pellets must have gotten in the vent line and are plugging it up closer to the tank.

Absolutely CRAP design. There needs to be fail-safe design features that will not cause this NONSENSE. A dealer would have had my tab up near a grand by now...

I hear ya, I never got a response and never fixed the problem. I just fill it by hand very very slowly!! It stinks that I can't just click the handle down to fill anymore. Sorry to hear you have the same problem also. I couldn't agree more Absolute CRAP design!

Just wondering and might be a stupid question and just wanting to cover all basis, but do you always go to the same gas station or does this happen no matter where you go?

The truck I had before my current '14 was a '98 1500 Z71. I didn't have consistent problems, but once in awhile it would spill over or keep clicking off like it was full. The spilling over was just random and rarely happened so I figure that was just something with the pump at the time. If it did the constant clicking I would pull the nozzle out just a little bit, roughly halfway out if not less, and it would continue to fill up with no problem. That also was random but happened a few more times than spilling over.

I think I've only had it spill over with my '14 once and never had it click off constantly at all so maybe that pre-mature clicking off had something to do with the '98 truck. I also don't remember it ever clicking off on my old '86 Chevy C10 truck and can't remember if it ever spilled over.

My '04 Sierra cab&chassis has dual tanks, with dual fillers, and the front tank, I can just put in the pump and go, but the rear one, I have to rig the handle to be held up 90 degrees and then it will fill the tank at full speed. with the handle hanging down, it'll click off right away.

I've had both tanks down, blown out all the evap lines, and the filler tubes/hoses are the same front and back, so it must just be some subtle difference in flow rates/angle of fill tubes...

I've tried every angle and every partial insertion depth. The problem is the tank DOES NOT VENT. No matter what.

I bypassed the carbon canister completely and connected the main tank vent to the new evap solenoid assembly and at least I was able to fill the tank from 1/2 to full in a little over 5 minutes, but still pump, click, pump, click. Only slightly better.

Mine is the same as GrandPaul's situation. I've tried many different stations/brands etc. same problem.

I can now fill the tank in under 10 minutes with slowest setting clicking off maybe 1 or 2 times near the end.

Got a 04 2500HD with a flat bed. The filler is in the side of the bed.

I thought my slow fill, click, fill and repeat was because of the flat bed.

You mean I need to chase my vent tube to the charcoal canister?

Or is that even going to work?

Read through ALL the stuff I've done.

I think clearing the main vent line from the tank to the charcoal canister is the key.

Bought the 2016 truck new and keep experiencing the fill, click, fill, click, fill, click, fill, click...maybe .2 to .5 of a gallon per gas fill. Tried all angles, nozzle insert depths, different trigger squeezing, different gas stations, in the heat, in the cold, nothing seems to resolve the issue. My only complaint at an otherwise positive experience. Very frustrating. Any ideas for a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks rpmdna and martha3065. I've sent a contact to the dealer letting them know about my experience. Hopefully they'll identify the issue and take care of the problem.
