Back when I worked at a dealership we had a front end tech and all he did do was front end work on Buicks and GMC trucks, the local Chev dealer would bring his problem children to him to fix. So I would say to check at the dealership and see if they have a front end tech before writting them off.

they get paid more than .5 ,,,its more like 1.0 to 1.5hrs ,,,,and if ya dont road test it ,youre a douche imo

 

steering wheel being centered is the first thing to do btw ,,,,its called the steering wheel seat belt that comes with alignment machines

 

most stores have a dedicated front end guy who does very well on flat rate ,,

In my area the door rate is $125 to $130 an hour. Techs flat rate is around $25 to $30 an hour. I don't think that the dealer is giving the techs $45 for a $79.95 alignment when they don't want to pay the $30 of the $130 door rate. I know a lot of tech are getting out of dealerships and going fleet if they can. At the dealerships they are flagging 60 hours and getting paid for 30 to 35 hours. Not the best work environment in my opinion.

There is an adjustment on the steering box that adjusts the mesh between the steering gear and worm, but you have to be careful taking the free play out of it- if you go too tight, it can bind, not what you want in your steering mechanism.
