Hello all,

 

I had to swap the engine in my 04 Silverado (4WD crew cab z71 - if it matters) with salvage unit. Took replacement engine down to long block and used everything from my original engine except cam/crank sensors from old engine (donor engine was out of 04 suburban). After connecting it all back up, no crank issue appeared. I know that anything is possible with wiring breaks, but I was careful to repair and reattach any grounds, and most of the electrical is plug-n-play so hard to mess up.

 

Anyway, here are the symptoms...

  1. Key on, dash lights and radio come on as normal, security indicator light turns off.
  2. Won't crank when key moved to start.
  3. After about 30 seconds, the security light comes on solid, and the radio, security light, and daytime running lamps stay on for about 10 minutes after the key is removed (door open/closed make no difference).
  4. I cannot communicate with the onboard computers with my OBD adapter (using Torque - just to read codes and verify sensor output). There is power at the OBD port, but software cannot find the ECU (or whatever this talks to).
  5. Key fob no longer activates the power locks.

 

The only thing that was abnormal about the first power cycle was some unusual clicking near one of the fuel injectors for cylinder 1 and the battery was only outputting about 10 volts. I charged the battery and I cannot find any obvious shorts or missed connections or wires but still stuck.

 

Diags:

  1. Checked all the fuses in the boxes under hood and in cab (have not checked the mega-fuse yet but have lights and power so could it be bad)?
  2. Verified there are no unhooked grounds from original harness. I have one wire from harness on back of block by cps, one ground strap on head to the firewall, and another wire from wiring harness hooked to same location as the negative battery cable.
  3. If I jump the solenoid at the starter, the engine will crank but not start.

I suspect that the BCM is toast but would love to try some more trouble shooting steps or get some expert advice. I would also appreciate a suggestion on the best service manual to purchase for this vehicle.

If it won't even turn over it sounds like a security issue. You might can try a 30 minute quick learn.

 

1. Put key in ignition and turn on, just turn on don't try to crank, let it sit with key on for 10 minutes.

2. After 10 minutes turn key off and then turn on again for 10 minutes.

3. After 10 minutes turn key off and then turn on again for 10 minutes.

4. After the last 10 minutes turn key off and then try to crank.

I would try the security re-learn first as well. My truck acted the same way when I changed my ecm. I was expecting it to not work, so I did not bother trying to get around it. Just did the security learn. It is like waiting for water to boil just sitting there for 10 minutes to go by. Did not know if waiting 12 minutes would cause the learn to fail, so I sat there for the 30 minutes, making sure I did not go past the 10 minutes each time.

 

Did you unplug your ecm? Or change the ecm? Are you sure the ecm connections are all good?

I tried the relearn procedure several times but the security light never goes off (or blinks). I never unplugged anything at ECM or PCM, just the wires running to the engine of course. I can't remember unhooking any grounds except the three I mentioned but it seemed like a ground issue initially. I just hope that my fiddling with it didn't burn up the BCM. But, I have found 3 other examples posted of similar condition and two had bad BCM's suddenly fail. Interestingly, two of these people had issues after the battery discharged and they tried to start the truck.

 

I need to get a wiring schematic and start checking for any missing grounds. Anyone know how many grounds and where they are for this truck ;-)?

 

Also, best manual to start the trouble shooting? Would a Haynes or Chilton's work or do I need the GM factory?

 

Happy to entertain more suggestion or diag steps.

So, got the used bcm in and with it plugged in and the key turned to aux then off appeared normal. I could hear the throttle body advance as expected when I turned to ignition position but then I immed heard a fluttery clicking noise from the top front of the engine (very fast paced clicking kind of like a starter solenoid with too little current), so I turned key off and it continued until I pulled the battery.

 

I tried to cyle to on again, determined to locate the clicking, and the truck was back to behaving like it did with the original bcm, no response and light staying on. I think bcm number two just went bye bye.

 

So, I need to figure out how in the world I created some electrical gremlin. I would like to try and manually activate the power to the engine PCM and circuits that the bcm powers to diagnose the source of the noise and then trace that circuit. What a pia.

PROBLEM SOLVED (I love to be wrong).

 

Finally got some warmer weather and started from scratch and basic looking for this issue in the wiring. I found two issues, the first was one of the coil pack wires on the donor motor had bare insulation and was grounding out, the second was the primary ground wire by the cam position sensor had broken off. I had even soldered a new ring terminal to it but somehow it got tugged loose. This is very hard to get to on my truck (behind the manifold and deep) but I built an entirely new segment with a heavy steel terminal, and soldered that on it.

 

When I corrected these two issues, the starter fired on first try (with the original BCM). Got it running and its motoring along fine now. It is amazing that a bad ground wire can cause so many issues that seem unrelated but it did.

 

I didn't get many replies here from GM techs, which I understand and that is fine. I too have spent hours and hours answering questions on other forums and it doesn't pay bills, satisfy my family, or teach me much, but I try to give back. I do however hate it when people post a question, get a few replies, and the thread goes unresolved because the OP never updates the final outcome (good or bad). Hopefully this will help someone else, and thanks to the people that read and the ones that replied.

    • Congratulations Isttype, on your gmc. Really like my 2024 2500hd sle doublecab now with 85,500 miles.  I checked the oil today at 4800 miles since last oil change and barely reading on the stick.  I don't care if GM says it's Acceptable adding a quart every 2000 miles because that is 100% BS, It is not a 1966 Harley Shovelhead! Sounds like it's setting up a future failure like I had with my 1500 6.2l. Other than oil consumption problems, I really like the 6.6l gas and 10 speed is really nice.  Towed a light 4000 pound trailer last week and averaged 14 mpg.  I was pretty impressive that a 7300 pound gas truck did 14mpg towing, Later-
    • Long Term Cold Cycle Limited Testing   Back to the 1990's and XOM's million mile test. Since then there have been others and there will be more. Schaeffer's, AMSOIL to name two. Of these Schaeffer's is the stand alone which I will explain in a bit later.    http://papers.sae.org/600190/:   http://papers.sae.org/850215/:   Up to 75% of  engine wear occurs on cold starts. These two links (above) provide the technical reasons for engine wear. In a nut shell, and by a large margin, cylinder wear is what takes out most motors and even with a pre-oiling system that part of the engine is dry enough on cold starts and cold warm up to pierce Stribeck.   So when you put a motor, or a car, on a dyno for a million miles stopping only for oil changes, (yes fuel is uninterrupted) or break down maintenance, you are depriving the test of the most important part of it's wear cycle. Yes a million is then a pretty easy walk even for a mineral oil under those conditions.    How about cleanliness during the long test cycles? Same thing. Varnishes that stick rings and insulate parts are laid down by repetitive 'heat cycles'. It's the cool down the precipitates the varnishes. These long runs also hinder acidic attack caused by cold start richness and less than optimal cold start ring sealing. They hinder water formation and enhance breathing of the crankcase; the petri dish of acid formation, the first step in sludge formation, amalgamation and precipitation. These motors are also monitored and controlled for water and oil temperatures to within the "normal operating range".      https://www.swri.org/sites/default/files/sequence-iiih-test.pdf Note the test sequence in some boutique oils literature for testing, API IIIH, is not the standard used for the ILSAC G7 testing. Does that mean it is irrelevant? No, not as used. As used as a 'visual guide' it makes it's point. The G7 weighted piston deposit minimum is lower.      Back to Schaeffer's. That was a cyclical test of an engine in fleet service and not a dyno mule and if you saw the video it was not mirror clean but wear was low.    There are oils like BioSyn and other 'Renewable" source oils that taught cleanliness and have proven themselves in fleet testing. Havoline an other example.    The newest ILSAC G-7 test prioritize cleanliness, LSPI mitigation and fuel economy OVER WEAR. In comparison Porsche C30 Specification Verses ILSAC G-7 Specification below:      Some will balk that this graph isn't apples to apples and I will challenge that in that this graph represent the SPECIFICATION and not the any One Oil Performance.   It is absolutely possible to minimize wear, maximize cleanliness and mitigate LSPI etc., It just isn't cheap and currently I see none that are not walking toward profit over performance.     
    • I don't think you will need a split, separate product, etc., the OBD port should be able to deliver everything you need. Since your device would be plugged into it all the time, it wouldn't miss anything.    Hardware in this case will be the easiest part of your project - ELM 327 devices will already deliver all the data you need. Reporting/software is where your advantage/marketability is.
