CFL and Fluorescent to LED

Been thinking for a while. I already converted my bedroom bulbs to LED. My new garage has 4 ft T8 fluorescent tubes on the ceiling. I am debating converting the whole house. Has anyone done this?

I looked into it but in no way can it be economically justified. You would have to be very careful to even find LEDs that match the light output/watt of T8s.

If LEDs have capabilities you want that the T8s don't such as dimming then OK.

The cost to replace the T8's is still expensive. I think the last time I looked it was something like $35 a bulb. They are a direct replacement, you just wire them direct. No need for a ballast like the florescent needs. So like in my garage would cost me $280 to replace the 8 bulbs I have in there. I'm sure in another year or so the price will come down.

I have 6500k fluorescents in my garage. It's like daylight

I have 2 fixtures in my garage so 4 tubes. For me it would be under $200 and im more curious to see how much I can drop my power bill.

Not worth it imo. The T8 has more light output, about 30% more on avg. Only 10W difference at most between the two. Payoff time will be great, unless you're leaving your garage lights on all day long Lifespan of the LED is much more than T8. So if you want to spend $200 and have a darker garage, go for it.

I have 8 8ft old style florescent s the ballast is bad In one and the other is probably not far behind. I have wondered about alternative lighting ideas also

I think LED is not good as energy-saving lamps.

Why is that? I like the looks of them and use less energy than the bulbs they will replace. So far my living room, rear interior entry way by the garage and back door, and my front exterior lights are led. Here is a comparison in my living room with 3-11w 5000k LED bulbs and 1-60w GE Reveal incandescent

Chris instead of a LED's for your garage i would look into a T5 fixtures. T8's are old technology that is being phased out.

LEDs are a bit more expensive to set up, and if you have a tight budget this probably is not the best idea. But i replaced all my lighting with LEDs, and i can reaaaaly feel the difference in the lighting, plus the bills have shrunken a lot since then.

I installed 3 each 8' twin tube T12s in my small two car garage/work shop with 6500Ks.

If i'm working I want light.

If I'm relaxing I want low light.

If I'm having S** I want no light.

 

LEDs have such a looooonnnnnngggg payback.

 

Difficult to find 100W 6500K dimable LEDs. OK, maybe not difficult but very expensive.

My checkbook usually has the final say so in my buying decisions, but is sometimes over-ruled by the wife.
