Good article about the future Silverado/Sierra 1500 and F-150!&#33

6 speeds is enough. We are not driving semis....

As for the aluminum, I don't care, as long as the styling is better than the current K2XX trucks, and that F-150 aluminum abomination...

I agree, IMO, 6 gears is more than enough. I just can imagine the constant shifting of an 8 or 10 speed auto transmission, not to mention the reliability issues that will more than likely come with it. I know truck manufactures are doing it to meet the new fuel economy standards, but the way they test them is a joke!!!

I was at the Daytona 500 and visited the GM area (lots of nice stuff) and talked to a older gentleman and I starting asking about the big blocks(none were on display), and the discussion turned to future transmissions. He had said they were working on getting the new 8 speed transmissions out, and the current 6 speeds (6l80, 6l90) were good, but not going to be the best for the aftermarket. Currently the more robust setup is the ole4l80 and the large aftermarket it has. This whole conversation came from him asking why I was looking for the big blocks. I basically told him in the next 1 or 2 I plan on getting my 68 Camaro from CA, and finally getting to it, and while I like the LS motors, nothing has the deep torque and easy HP as a big block! He stated the current 6 speeds are kinda of a stop gap, they are good, but the 8 speeds that are in development are really going to bring out the gas mileage and also the robustness that we all want. I thought it was pretty neat to hear.

I wouldn't call it a good article. There isn't much information in it.

I disagree, I wish the Sierras had a 7 or 8 speed transmission. My soon to be second car (I just order a Denali 6.2) is a Mercedes GL450 with a 7 speed ZF Transmission. It is the smoothest transmission I have ever driven. Plus, the SUV is remarkably quick. From my test drive of a Chevy High Country with 6.2 (closest thing I could find to a Denali), the MB with 100 hp less and 100 pound feet less torque is quicker and the transmission is smoother. It never hunts for gears. If the transmission is done correctly, it will not hunt.

I think it would be great if GM gave GMC a 7 or 8 speed tranny to further distinguish from Chevy. (Keyless Go and blindspot detection would be nice too!).

I hope these 8 and 10 speed transmissions will have the gear hunting figured out. My 6 speed was so ridiculous figuring out what gear it wanted or what gear it wanted to stay in it drove me up a wall. Thank God for BlackBear and Justin, it does what it should at the direction of my foot now. I'm ALL for more gears if it means better mpg's and faster acceleration, just please put more R&D into the gear selection through the computer. It bothered the hell out of me when you would put your foot in it and there would be a couple second lag before the truck even decided on a gear and did anything.

These higher gear counts may be useless. The new Cherokee has a 9 speed and Car and Driver reported it never went into 9th despite being told the criteria was 75 MPH or faster on level ground or a slight downhill. A V8 may do better with running at low RPM (the Pentastar V6 isn't much down low power wise) but I wouldn't hold my breath.

4-6speed was a huge improvement and I'm thinking 8 might be but at what point is enough enough and it'll be doing nothing but hunting gears the entire drive
