Wind noise ?

I have a 2014 Silverado Crew Cab 4 x 4 Z71. I ordered it and it was built in early July. Have really enjoyed the truck and have found it a great improvement over my 2008.

One issue I have noticed is that the longer I drive it the worse the wind noise appears to get. Especially on the drivers side. Has anyone else noticed this ? Are there any known issues with door seals ? It is especially noticeable in the front of the driver's door.

Thanks for any input.

I am surprised by the wind noise in my truck. For how quite the overall truck is, when I do get wind noise, it is very loud. Loud enough that my kids in the back can hear it. Now saying that, I don't have it all the time, just when I have a cross wind and the drivers side door is on the downwind side, if that makes since. If I am driving south, and the wind is out of the west, my drivers side would be on the east side. Anyway, I am not too worried about it, the wind has to be blowing close to 15 + mph for it to happen. 99% of the time I don't have it, and if I do have it, my guess most vehicles would have it too. Again with how quite the truck is, I thought wind noise would be non-existent.

I am just happy that it is not like my 05 Trailblazer, a bird fart would create wind noise in the Trailblazer!

The noise is caused when the wind rushes over the 1/4 crack between the door and body. Much like blowing across the breath hole on a flute. There are some things even the best gaskets can not block out. Try not to drive North, South, East and West at the same time. :>)

Look at the cheap way GM attaches the door weather stripping. It is not like the old way, that was glued in a channel, it is basically just hanging there on little plastic rivets. They are spaced all the way around the door, like a floating seal. I'm pretty sure they only keep the wind noise out if the door is closed tight against the seal and as the vehicle gets older and as this material ages the outside wind noise will get progressively louder. I'd be real surprised if this seal doesn't starts sagging and actually fall off, in the future. Real good design GM, now maybe you have something you can sell your customers at your parts departments, as warranty's expire,

And that my friends, is why GM calls its wind noise complaints as normal.

Purchased my 2014 Chevorlet Silverado Extended Crew cab Z71 on 6 Jan. 2014, on the way home from dealership (200 mile drive) heard the wind noise coming from front passenger door mainly but also heard it from driver door. On the drive home had a good 30 mph winds most of the time, also driving speed 65-70 mph. Took it to my local Chevy dealership. They couldn't find anything and with a chuckle they suggested I videotape the noise. That's what I did and made an appointment. Was asked what the noise sounded like and service guy made a noise. He asked if I could make the noise sound. I laughed and asked if I was on camera, then stated are you kidding? Asked him if he would like to hear one of the eight different videotaping, his choice of which video. After listening to the first one, he said he know what it was, he typed something in the computer and said it was the bug-guard. I purchased at the dealership when buying the truck and they installed it. I laughed, are you kidding. From what he said the bug-guard changes the aero dynamics of the truck, pushes the wind into the rubber gasket at the rounded corner of the doors. He said they would add something to something - he didn't speak very clearly. Got the truck back and have not heard the noise since. What did they exactly do to fix the wind noise? Don't know, but the next time I go in will ask them. Why should I ask them since the noise is no longer? Well it's because I think the fix was to raise the whole hood. Opened the hood and you can see where they made adjustment to the main hinges on both side and the front mounts. When sitting in the drivers seat I noticed the hood was higher then the fenders and not flush like they were. If this is what they did to fix the wind noise, why didn't they clearly tell me this and give me the options - bug-guard or no bug-guard. If this was not tested before selling the bug-guards as an extra for the truck. Then it should not be treated as not an issue and inform people about it now and upfront about it.

This also comes back to recall topics. Two days after I get the truck home I get a recall letter from GM. What?!!! Why wasn't this fixed before I received the truck?

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
